After a few minutes of reading into this thing more closely and not just reciting what I heard 2 years ago I can quote this quora answer:

"So they made The Princess and the Frog and it was everything Disney and the Golden Age of Disney stood for: princesses and magic spells. But there was controversy and, well, simply no universal praise like Pixar enjoyed and the movie brought up $267 million. By no means a little, but certainly not enough to warrant existence versus the studio’s previous effort Bolt ($309) and certainly not against Pixar’s Up ($731).

For a short while there were talks of doing Rapunzel in 2D but then they went for 3D and turned it into Tangled which raked in almost twice what The Princess and the Frog had done. By then, the cute, low budgeted 2D effort Winnie the Pooh, which was never meant for box office glory, only confirmed what everyone already knew: nostalgia and even quality aren’t enough to make audience’s love 2D. The short Paperman proved audience’s still cared for 2D and quality could still be told with 2D. But along came Frozen and absolutely nobody felt the need to fix what was working so well."

Let me rephrase my earlier statement, too bad it was one of the last 2D full feature animations done by Disney.
