Gimmicks are important in games like Smash. Otherwise you'd get the same exact game over and over and over again just with slightly different rosters/changes. Why buy the next three if they're the same as the last one? I haven't played Sm4sh much so I don't really know any of these gimmicks, but a lot of them sound kind of fun.
Completely serious, which ones?
Also I agree to a point, but not having a story mode was dumb, the clone characters were the worst they’ve ever been, and here’s the real big one, not changing characters or cutting some old ones for new ones really starts to make it feel stale. Like you were saying, what’s the point of buying new ones if they’re the same. That’s the thing, Nintendo isn’t changing smash enough as a game, they play it too safe. Mortal Kombat X was crazy different and it’s the highest selling mortal kombat
I miss the story too. I agree that the clone characters were the worst. How does that make it stale? If you change every character, the people who main them and are comfortable with them will have to change. You don't have to change every character for each new title. Just add new ones and drop the shit ones nobody cares about like Game & Watch. Not to say that you can't change characters a bit, but you don't need to change each one for each title. Characters like Gannondorf could stand to be changed because he's a shit Captain Falcon clone. Giving him a sword and a down+B transformation to a bowser-stat-like Ganon would be good, but characters like Link are fine the way they are.
Except Nintendo does change them for each title for the most part. Melee had a much larger roster, homerun contest, the mission mode, a fuck ton more maps, adventure mode, new battle-modes, and trophies.
Brawl brought more to the roster, added a full fledged adventure mode with story and cinematics, more battle modes, map editor, more maps, 2 non-Nintendo characters, stat boosting, pictures(sounds stupid, but you could take a lot of hilarious ones), and online play.
Sm4sh did all the things you mentioned. Each title is distinct in it's own way. They're all similar, but not samey. Nintendo does a good job at it. Granted the last one's lack of story mode and clone roster were problems, but that can be blamed on the director of it which I think he stepped down. I'm eager to see what the next Smash brings. Hopefully a continuation of the Subspace. Maybe a better map editor too.
I don’t want them to change every character, mixing around some of the characters would be nice though. If some people are upset their one character is changed, we’ll honestly they should be able to play more than just one character anyway...
You said they shouldn’t change link, but honestly there’s two links. since they’re adding botw link, cause he has different items they could make him different, and then have toon link play like classic link
But they have mixed around a lot of the characters. Each title tends to tweak a few. Brawl brought in Zero Suit Samus which was a pretty big change for Samus. Melee gave Link a bow. Brawl gave Mario FLUDD to help differentiate from Luigi. Why should the player change how they play? If a character has been a certain general way and they are more comfortable with that, why should they change? What do you think is the point of a large roster? To make them play each character? No, it's to pick the character that best suits them. There is no reason to force them to pick new characters. That's why people are generally upset if they change a character. They're used to a certain way that character moves and don't want to figure out a second choice from scratch. For example, in Injustice, I was best with Green Arrow and Nightwing. GA was my first main, but NW was still good. When the second game came out, there was no Nightwing or character similar to him so I was out a familiar character I was good with.
There are multiple Links. Not two. His skillset has pretty much been the same across most 3D titles. They'll probably give BOTW Link his own slot because he's unique, but that's just a new character....which is what they've done plenty of times before. A new character is not changing an existing one. The old Link will probably still be in the game because he's a staple fighter of the Smash series. There would be too much outcry if they remove/changed him to something else.
You keep saying you want things that they've pretty much already been doing.
They’ve changed a little but not a crazy amount, I just think variety is nice. And in my example botw link is pretty different for a link. Like his regular attacks could be the same, but would about all his sheikah slate stuff? Would they just ignore that to keep the boomerang, even though those are rarer in botw
Maining characters is fine, but if every character is expected to stay exactly the same and never be retired, then that’s what leads to clones. Picking up new characters is treated as the end of the world, but it’s pretty easy, especially in smash
Also with your injustice example, you at the very least play 2 characters, I more mean the people who ONLY play one character, and a lot of times didn’t even try out everyone. Oh and there’s a few characters that play kinda similar to nightwing in injustice 2 if you still have an inkling to play; robin and red hood if I remember correctly
Which is what I said. It's not necessary or a good idea to drastically change a game. Variety is nice and each title has brought new twists to it. Granted the last one's roster was full of clones, it still had new features like 8 fighter matches. I already said I think they'll make BOTW Link a separate character. He's too different from regular Link. Link in Smash is a staple character. Making him the BOTW Link would mean they would have to change him significantly which leads me to believe they won't.
>Maining characters is fine, but if every character is expected to stay exactly the same and never be retired, then that’s what leads to clones.
I never said they had to stay exactly the same. I even pointed out how various characters get small tweaks. Link didn't have a bow in 64, but they added one in later titles. It didn't drastically change him, but it was a tweak. Mario got FLUDD. Samus got Zero Suit.
Yeah and if their one character gets changed drastically, they are out a main character which is why it's a bad idea to drastically change characters. How do you know they don't try others? Whenever I bump into someone who played the game, they tried all fighters. It's a bold and quite frankly baseless claim to say that most people who only main one fighter never played as others. Robin and Red Hood are not like Nightwing at all. The closest character would probably be Blue Beetle, but he's different in his own way. Red Hood is mostly about counters and Robin is a mix between Deathstroke and Batman. Nightwing was not like either.
Ah then I don’t remember nightwing very well. I just remember he was agile
As far as meeting people who haven’t tried all the characters. I personally know people who pick one character and never touch anyone else. It’s asinine I know, but I got a bud that would only ever play samus, and we finally got him to play someone else...and now he will only ever play cloud...
I make sure to try every character and I know a lot of other people do too, I’m just saying it’s probably good to have at least a handful
And ultimately I feel the variety aspect is important just because at the end of the day a fighting game IS it’s roster. The other features are cool, but it’s ultimately down to who’s playable; especially when the gameplay hasn’t changed “too” drastically between games. So I guess I’m saying that there’s not much of a point in making a new game if the roster is too similar, they could just release seasons of dlc characters as long as they fan base doesn’t die, which smash could definitely survive doing
Like they didn’t bring wolf back, and honestly I felt he was less similar to fox than falco is. But falco is popular so he’ll never get dropped. People would be mad if he did, I get that, but it would open the way for new characters if they had decided to take away falco and maybe update fox and wolf with falco-sequels stuff.
Let’s keep it light, you playing fighterZ?
That pretty much sums up every fighter in the game aside from the big ones. Nightwing was fast and his B move was to switch from two sticks to a staff. Each set had their own combos and strengths. Blue Beetle is similar with his B move, but lacks the same qualities.
>I personally know people who pick one character and never touch anyone else
Which is probably their main. Not that they never tried anyone else. I've never met anyone who plays Injustice who never tried every character out. With a fighting game with a unique roster like that, it's only stupid to not test each one to learn their strengths and weaknesses. One guy you know does not mean that everyone else is the same. I've never met anyone who refused to try anyone else.
I never said variety wasn't important. No need to argue on that.
>So I guess I’m saying that there’s not much of a point in making a new game if the roster is too similar
Except they want money. Making a new game means they get more money than a small fighter DLC. Plus, a new game opens up the possibility of new features. Had we just stuck to DLC updates at melee, then we would have never gotten final smashes, a story mode, 8 fighter matches, and all the other future features. Hardware limitations of the GC would have prevented most of it. Also, GC didn't have online so how would you purchase DLC fighters? So lets pretend it stuck with Brawl. Problem is they are phasing out the Wii. They stopped supporting it for the most part. I received a "mail" from them on it a few years ago saying that there would be no more updates or anything as they were focusing on the newer systems. By not making a new game, they'd have to focus on an outdated system while still pumping out titles for the Switch. It's asinine to expect them to not make a new title for the series on the new console when they want as many people to buy one as possible. Smash is a big series. Putting it on Switch will guarantee sales.
Wolf was like an inbetween Fox/Falco. They're all essentially clones of Fox. In Brawl, they made Falco a bit different. Wolf, in my opinion, wasn't great. His heavy weight really hurt his abilities. His fall speed was really brutal and a good chunk of any match is spent in the air. That's a big problem.
>you playing fighterZ?
Picture. I heard good things about it and it looks fun.
I’ve met multiple people who only try and play one character, I just gave an example
Bonus modes like smash run, maybe? That's my guess. Compared to Brawl, Sm4sh removed some little details and big features, ranging from stickers to a story mode.
