All of my anger.
Basicly you got this place called Academy City where you have people with special "psychic" powers called espers, and then later they introduce magicians that work for a church.
At first you have the "science" world and the "magic" world being 2 incompatible different things but later you discover that science city is the heart of some 4D chess shit involving angels, dimensions an shit.
there's all manner or science and magic fuckery, and various plots surrounding various characters, but there is ofcourse one "main" character, who is introduced as a weak esper but it's hinted that his power is some weird shit that is neither psychic or magic.
The first series "A Certain Magical Index" is mostly Action and Fantasy following the main character Touma, the second part "A Certain Scientific Railgun" is slice of life revolving around another central character, Misaka (it's slice of life so it has a very different tone from the first series, and it covers events that already happened from Misaka's perspective but it does advance the story and add new elements). The third part which unfortunately hasn't been turned into an anime, revolves around Accelerator, one of the strongest characters in that universe; an anti-hero character that ends up adopting and trying to protect a certain loli as repentance for his past. I haven't actually read it but his story arcs are really dark and gritty, it ought to be good shit.
it's mainly people with magical powers, but there's some science in the mix too, like
cloning of one strong magician to train another strong magician into achieving the next level
that's inaccurate, magicians and espers are completely seperate things
magical powers =/= magicians. naruto has magical powers, doesn't mean that he's a magician.
yeh but when the premise of the anime is that there are magicians who use literal magic and "espers" who have special abilities but are incompatible with magic, using the term magic to refer to the guys who can literally die from using magic is inappropriate when describing a concept.
