All gases have a GWP, a measure of their strength as a greenhouse gas. CO2 has a GWP of 1, methane has a GWP of 28-36 and N2O has a GWP of 265-298.
The reason CO2 is so focused on is because it has the highest concentration in the atmosphere, 200 times more CO2 in the atmosphere than methane and much less N2O in the atmosphere as well.
Also, even if it is the number 1 reason the earth is heating up, as far as I can tell the only negative effects are rising sea levels. They say increased harsh weather but the science there seems very shaky. Increased CO2 in the atmosphere means plants grow faster. Also, warm means wet and warm+wet=life.
I read an article how a rise in the sea levels would change the flow of the gulf stream, which currently keeps europe warm, meaning that we would face very harsh winters in europe.
I can't find it. If you could point it to me that'd be great, I'm curious.
I found this after a quick search
Since I am german my main sauce is german
Basicly they say we would cool down about 5 to 10 degrees without the gulf. And it is very likely that this will happen because of all the non salt water from the melting ice caps.
Ah I see. But luckily, in order for the gulf stream to stop global temperatures would have to be pretty high, and both sources state that they would likely balance out in Europe. It appears as though the combination of these factors saves Europe the harshest consequences of global warming.
"only negative effects are rising sea levels"
Given that most people live on the coast, that's a pretty fuckin huge deal.
Please save me, worst- case scenario and my entire nation gets flooded
Sea levels are only rising because of polar caps melting. There's no infinite amount of ice, and for it to melt it all to begin with it would need to be on average several hundred degrees on certain parts of the surface. Projections show it coming up by two degrees at the worst and furthest they've mapped it out.
As long as Africa and most of Asia stop overpopulating within a century or so, land wont be a problem.
It is a huge deal, I used improper terminology in my previous post. That said, economically it has minimal impact on people, insurance will take care of everything in developed countries and undeveloped countries packing up and moving is no issue. There is an impact on business/government side and that needs to be factored into the equation.
But I don't know how likely it is your country will flood over, but just in case get your ass immigrated over here to the glorious Midwest. There's nothing to do, but everything is cheap.
There's a lot of plant species that require a certain range of temperatures to survive, and are left over from the ice age. The more CO2 is in the air, the faster they'll grow, but the warmer it gets, the more stunted their growth becomes if they don't die outright.
I'd agree that a warmer and wetter world is better for life, but not the kind of life the world has right now. This is all happening too fast to allow for any significant evolution, and our living history is too short to allow natural processes to make up for what we do.
Aside from that, there's plenty of science that supports the link between rising temperatures and harsh weather, but I hardly dabble in climatology so I can't really speak for it.
There's plenty of science saying that us outputting shitloads of CO2 is a bad thing, but it's hard to say for certain how bad, and very little information given on the potential pros is all I'm saying.
It seems to me that the cons keep getting milder and milder as the years go by, in the early 2000s it was "If we reach 400PPM there's no turning back, it's doomsday, armageddon" now we've reached 400PPM and it's "We really need to cap out at 450PPM, we'll still see harsh weather, but we'll survive at 450, and if need be we can cap out at 500 but that would be worse still."
And maybe we really, really do need to cap out, but now that we've reached the doomsday PPM and nothing bad has happened, it's time to talk about whether or not the economic impacts outweigh the potential environmental impacts.
Well there's some problems weighing the economics of the situation too. There's no chance in hell that any human crops would be driven to extinction by rising temperatures; anything too important is already being preserved. While farming is made more challenging for sure, these challenges have been greatly mitigated by GMO work. But a lot of biomedical and robotics work is centered around the study of exotic species that are sometimes barely alive in the wild anymore, alongside newly discovered ones we had no reason to care about before.
A lot of the extinction right now is due to habitat destruction, but even if we get a reign on that it wouldn't stop the heat from finishing the job. We aren't in a position to measure the economic impact of losing scientifically significant species because we have no way of knowing where they are or what they do or how useful they could be. This even holds true of species we've
We could just assume that anything we don't yet know about has zero economic impact, "bird in the hand" style, but I personally think there's something to be said for the two in the bush.
And yeah I get your point about climate data being hard to politically discern. I don't think it will be clear what's happening today until many tomorrows have gone by, so grains of salt all around.
CO2 is disgusting, just look at China's air
Please never say this in actual argument.
You're retarded and so are the 4 people who thumbed you up. CO2 is not a disgusting gas, it's clear and odorless. You're literally breathing it out right now, and the shit that makes your breath stink is not CO2.
When you think of disgusting gases coming out of a vehicle it's typically PM
which is basically just burnt ash and shit left over from the combustion process. Also there's NOx which isn't disgusting but it is a health hazard, and SOx which is a result of high sulfur content in diesel fuel
which is why there are sulfur regulations on diesel fuel
CO2 is not dirty, it's not a health hazard, it's plant food.
to be fair CO2 is technically a health hazard in that you can die from only breathing in CO2
So is pure oxygen gas. Anything can kill you if you breathe it hard enough.
But how bad would it get if you breathe through your skin?
Is the epidermis part of the circulation system?
You can die from drinking too much water too, fuckstick.
You're not wrong but you are a dumbmmy
spelt it wrong, didn't wanna fix it cause it made me chuckle
im fairly certain there is more than just co2 in china's air
