FCC's New Plan to Relax TV Guidelines in Age of Internet Media North America ------- 13th July, 2018 The FCC in a surprising turn of events, has started to relax TV requirements for children's TV blocks. Stating that in the age of streaming, the rules were nolonger needed. While cable continues to die, companies like Netflix and Amazon have managed to adapt to advancing technology and have carved out a large portion of the market for themselves. Saturday morning cartoons used to be an American tradition, with most kids happily watching their favourite shows while eating cereal or other such sugary delights. However as regulations piled up for cartoons, such as targeting ads and requiring educational content, cartoons became less profitable and soon began vanishing off networks. The FCC argues that while tech companies such as Youtube face no such regulations, TV companies rich losing their licenses if they try to compete. Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass) expressed his disappointment in the FCC's decision stating that they should have done more research to see how the changes will impact children. In recent polls 70% of Generation Z claim to not watch television at all, and consider "watching TV" as watching a streaming service. https://www.axios.com/fcc-wants-to-relax-kids-tv-rules-for-the-netflix-era-e4f5ceb6-eacd-4694-b5b2-9f04507ebcc9.htmlMueller Charges 12 Russians on Hacking Before Trump-Putin Summit ------- North America ------ The U.S. special counsel brought election meddling directly to Vladimir Putin’s doorstep just days before the Russian leader plans to meet with President Donald Trump, charging 12 Russian military intelligence officers with computer attacks meant to undermine the Democratic Party. The indictment, announced on Friday, fleshes out U.S. intelligence agencies’ longstanding accusation that Russia interfered with the 2016 presidential race. The case provides powerful evidence to rebut skeptics -- including Trump himself at times -- who say Russia may not have had a role. In a news conference, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein described how units of Russia’s GRU intelligence agency stole emails from the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton’s campaign, then released them in ways meant to dominate headlines as Americans prepared to vote. In a second operation, the officers targeted election infrastructure and local election officials. They set up servers in the U.S. and Malaysia under fake names to run their operations, paying for their work with cryptocurrency that had been “mined” under their direction. The fine details of Russian intelligence operations -- the names of officers, the buildings where they worked and the computers they used to run phishing operations and make payments -- suggest that prosecutors had an inside view aided by their own or another government’s intelligence apparatus. Rosenstein, who appointed Special Counsel Robert Mueller to investigate Russian election meddling, concluded his succinct announcement of the indictment with what amounted to a sermon on the importance of adhering to facts and the rule of law as partisan tempers flare. The Justice Department works independently of politics, he said, adding that he had informed the president earlier this week of its findings. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-07-13/mueller-indicts-12-russian-spies-for-hacking-in-2016-campaignTrump team meets Mexico's incoming president in effort to repair relations ------- North America ------- A team of top Trump administration officials traveled to Mexico City on Friday to meet the country’s next president and try to repair strained relations in a largely symbolic visit after nearly two years of diplomatic discord with America’s southern neighbor. Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo met with Mexico’s president-elect, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, a left-leaning populist who won the July 1 vote in a landslide. He met separately with outgoing President Enrique Peña Nieto, who has seen his popularity plummet in recent months. Pompeo was joined by Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen M. Nielsen, Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin, and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and senior advisor, who has Mexico in his portfolio of responsibilities. The delegation also included Carl Risch, head of consular affairs at the State Department, a sign of the priority on immigration. Pompeo told Lopez Obrador that the presence of “four of our most senior people” showed that Trump was serious about improving ties with one of America’s closest allies after bitter clashes over immigration, border security, trade and other disputes. http://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-pol-us-mexico-20180713-story.htmlChinese spy ship lurking off Hawaiian coast amid huge naval exercise: US officials ------- Asia ------ A Chinese spy ship is lurking off the coast of Hawaii during the largest international maritime exercise known as RIMJOB (Rim International Maritime Joint Operations Body), U.S. officials tell Fox News. It's not immediately clear where the Chinese vessel is located, but officials say it's in international waters (more than 12 nautical miles away), and not impacting the exercises. According to the Navy, “26 nations, 47 surface ships, five submarines, 18 national land forces and more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel will participate in the biennial Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise scheduled June 27 to Aug. 2, in and around the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California.” A senior Chilean official said it was “disappointing” Chinese would send a spy ship after being omitted from the maritime exercise this year. Dong Yaoqiong, 29, live-streamed herself throwing black ink over a photo of Xi in front of the Hainnan Airlines office in Shanghai’s Lujizui at about 6am on July 4, Taiwan News reported. “Oppose Xi Jinping authoritarian tyranny!” she can be heard shouting in Chinese during her protest against the Chinese Communist Party. She goads Xi Jinping to find her, while also calling for international organisations to protect her in the two-minute clip which quickly became viral on Twitter. Later that day, she took to Twitter again saying uniformed men had arrived at her home, sharing an image of police officers through a peephole. “There are a group of uniformed men were outside my door. I will change my clothes and go out shortly. I have committed no crime,” she tweeted. Her Twitter account was deleted shortly after and her video of the inking incident was unavailable. She had taken to Twitter a day earlier saying everyone should have “the right to be free from fear” and that she was being pursued by the Communist party for a while. As concern grew online from social media users, Dong’s address and phone number were shared online. Calls to her phone went unanswered. The Shanghai Public Security Bureau told Voice of America they were unaware of Dong’s disappearance. https://au.news.yahoo.com/woman-disappears-throwing-ink-photo-chinese-president-002354495.htmlFrance-Croatia final confirms Europe's World Cup dominance ------- Europe ------- A European nation is set to win the World Cup for the fourth time in a row this Sunday and in doing so confirm an unprecedented dominance for the Old World over their once mighty rivals in South America. Whether France or Croatia lift the trophy in Moscow, it will guarantee a minimum 20-year drought for South American sides. Until this streak, European teams had never won more than two World Cups in a row and that was back in 1934 and 1938. Confirming the hegemony, only one of the last eight finalists (Argentina in 2014) have come from Latin America. There are many possible reasons behind the Europeans’ superiority and some even recommend caution. Although Argentina and Peru were disappointing, Brazil outplayed Belgium for much of their quarter-final defeat, both Uruguay and Colombia did well until being knocked out without their most influential player, and Colombia were even eliminated in a penalty shootout that could easily have gone their way. “It’s seven matches in one month, a short event - you can make too much out of it,” Andy Roxburgh, a member of FIFA’s technical study group, told reporters in Moscow. “You have to look at the bigger picture over time to see if there is a trend.” https://www.reuters.com/article/us-soccer-worldcup-final-europe/france-croatia-final-confirms-europes-world-cup-dominance-idUSKBN1K31XO Which story did you enjoy most?
