[DN 19 Jan] Diet Water, NSA in troubleToshiro newsAdjust content blockingContent Blocking Block Politics?nextrandomComment Prev Next NSA deleted surveillance data it pledged to preserve North America ------- 19th Jan, 2018 The National Security Agency destroyed surveillance data it pledged to preserve in connection with pending lawsuits and apparently never took some of the steps it told a federal court it had taken to make sure the information wasn’t destroyed, according to recent court filings. Word of the NSA’s foul-up is emerging just as Congress has extended for six years the legal authority the agency uses for much of its surveillance work conducted through U.S. internet providers and tech firms. President Donald Trump signed that measure into law Friday. Since 2007, the NSA has been under court orders to preserve data about certain of its surveillance efforts that came under legal attack following disclosures that President George W. Bush ordered warrantless wiretapping of international communications after the 2001 terrorist attacks on the U.S. In addition, the agency has made a series of representations in court over the years about how it is complying with its duties. However, the NSA told U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey White in a filing on Thursday night and another little-noticed submission last year that the agency did not preserve the content of internet communications intercepted between 2001 and 2007 under the program Bush ordered. To make matters worse, backup tapes that might have mitigated the failure were erased in 2009, 2011 and 2016, the NSA said. http://archive.is/iOYxKA Leader of Zimbabwe's Opposition Party Was Among Five Killed in a Helicopter Crash ------- Africa ------- A group of prominent friends, including a key Zimbabwean opposition leader and a Texas-based investor and philanthropist, was heading to a ranch in the U.S. state of New Mexico when their helicopter crashed and burned in a remote area, killing five people aboard. Friends and family members confirmed Thursday that opposition leader Roy Bennett and his wife, Heather, had traveled to New Mexico to spend their holiday with friend and wealthy businessman Charles Burnett III at his ranch. Burnett’s friends, pilot Jamie Coleman Dodd of Colorado and co-pilot Paul Cobb of Texas, were ferrying the group aboard a Huey UH-1 when it went down after dark Wednesday. All five died, according to New Mexico State Police. The only survivor was Andra Cobb, the co-pilot’s daughter who was in a long-term relationship with Burnett. She was able to escape before the helicopter burst into flames. Her voice breaking, Martha Cobb told The Associated Press that her 39-year-old daughter was hospitalized with broken bones. “She’s just very distraught,” the mother said in a telephone interview. “I’m just glad my daughter is OK, but I hate that my husband of 41 years is gone.” http://archive.is/eNbAhScientists Observe Rare Supermassive Black Hole 'Double Belch' ------- Space ------- Scientists studying a supermassive black hole around 800 million light-years from Earth say they caught it ‘belching’ — blasting out jets of bright light — after ingesting hot gas. The team, led by University of Colorado Boulder researchers, was fortunate to catch the black hole in the act, as the action has rarely been seen before as a result of gas feeding. They also saw a remnant of a previous black hole belch, which occurred around 100,000 years before the second. The Hubble Space Telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory, along with observatories in Hawaii and New Mexico, were used to make the observation. “Black holes are voracious eaters, but it also turns out they don’t have very good table manners,” said the study’s lead author, CU Boulder Assistant Professor Julie Comerford, during a news conference on Jan. 11, according to Space.com. “We know a lot of examples of black holes with single burps emanating out, but we discovered a galaxy with a supermassive black hole that has not one but two burps.” http://archive.is/jHLzoEnormous Metalworking System, Including Bronze Age Weapons, Discovered Underneath Pyramid-Shaped Greek Island ------- Europe ------- A pyramid-shaped hill on the Greek island of Keros has revealed a complex system of drainage tunnels and metalworking from the 3rd millennium B.C. that was ahead of its time. Researchers from the University of Cambridge worked with members of the Ephorate of the Cyclades and the Cyprus Institute on an Early Bronze Age site called Dhaskalio, according to a new University of Cambridge press release. Rising sea levels have turned Dhaskalio into an island, but a thin land bridge (now underwater) still connects it to Keros, a "not so popular" island, according to the Greek community newspaper, Neos Kosmos. The promontory is a protected site and uninhabited today, but was once widely known for ritual activities, according to the Guardian. The island's ancient inhabitants painstakingly sharpened the promontory's natural pyramid shape by carving it into terraces, which they covered entirely with more than 1,000 tons of white stone imported from the neighboring island of Naxos. The end result was one of a "gleaming," unified monument looming over the Aegean sea. It's the largest known man-made structure built anywhere in the Cyclades during that time period, according to the University of Cambridge. Yet the pyramid's striking exterior didn't tell its full story. When excavating staircases built into the lower terraces, the researchers realized that the site had been engineered with extraordinarily technical sophistication. They also discovered two metalworking sites, one of which still contained a lead axe and a mold used to make molten copper into daggers. Another room revealed the top of a clay oven—still intact—hinting at an additional workshop waiting to be discovered. Because Keros contains no metal ore of its own, all the raw materials must have been imported from other islands or from the mainland. “At a time when access to raw materials and skills was very limited, metalworking expertise seems to have been very much concentrated at Dhaskalio," excavation co-director Michael Boyd told the University of Cambridge. "What we are seeing here with the metalworking and in other ways is the beginnings of urbanization." http://archive.is/xP3n1New thirst for "raw" water ------- North America ------- When people in central Oregon's Madras, Culver and Metolius turn on their taps, untreated spring water flows forth. It costs them less than a penny per gallon. A company in California buys that same water and sells it in big glass jugs for up to $8.60 a gallon around Los Angeles and San Francisco. The jugs are flying off the shelves. "The water's been doing really well," said Edwin Diaz, manager of Erewhon Market in Calabasas, a small city northwest of Malibu. "It's kind of a specialty item." Fans are quenching their thirst for "raw water" – water with no chemicals or other treatment that passes federal regulations because it's clean at the source. "It's a no-brainer," said Lee Sayer, a musician in San Francisco and anti-fluoride activist who has been drinking raw water for months. "You have water that's processed through the earth through natural processes – it's cleaned. And being that water has memory, it has a memory of tumbling through the rocks. It has micronutrients and I believe it's alive." http://archive.is/XUAFm [poll 11918DN] join list: TheNewsReel (970 subs)Mention History Yesterdays News: You need to login to view this link nextA HEARING INWARDS BLACK HULE In tlt. aall' In I E.
