[Fanfic] Salvage, Sarcasm, and Submarines by jessetheswift
Well, most of it is the fact that Abyssals are damn near impossible to take alive, there's been studied cadavers, of course, but unless one sits still long enough for you to pluck out all its barbettes, it's armed by default all the time, with at minimum 5" naval cannons, which the IRL turret mass comparison, btw, is larger than a car. if one suddenly at any point decides 'lol, just kidding' during any surrender scenario, they have a very good chance of killing virtually everyone around them.
In most combat between Abyssals, or Abyssals and their contemporaries, the Kanmusu, there are very few situations where you can take a combatant alive, as it mostly takes place at long range, and everyone is hilariously dangerous right up until their magazine or boiler explodes, or their bridge is damaged beyond repair. And in those cases, well, Abyssal Himes are the only ones able to 'bring life' to an empty hull, but they don't actually 'revive' the ship, they make a new one using the body of the previous one.
Lets say, for instance, Chitose dies, like, dead as a doornail, no crew left, bleh, ded. Kanmusu bodies don't just 'disappear' when they die. There are likely more than a few slowly rusting corpses on the bottom of the sea for horrified divers to find after the war if they haven't been gnawed on by Abyssal creatures by then.
Georgia, COULD start her up completely again, but without at least some of Chitose's crew alive to retain her spirit, what Georgia is animating isn't going to be Chitose, but a New-Construct Abyssal that is born in Chitose's hull and using it like a hermit crab. Meanwhile, Chitose's spirit will be in the waiting list to be re-summoned.
This, of course, leads to the hilarious circumstance of Chitose meeting her own previous body being driven by an Abyssal spirit, glowy eyes and everything.
Georgia or any submarine really, are uniquely suited to bringing in captive ships through ambush. But only if they engage them in perilous close combat that, as a rule, most rational ships avoid. And not many submarines are longer than a pre-dreadnought Battleship like Georgia. having to work as a group to theoretically take down even an enemy Cruiser without destroying it.
