Was made to promise I wouldn't use explosives for everything. And I didn't. Eventually I ran out of explosives. Did spend some time trying to make healing bombs.

I didn't quite work. I mean if we had a guy who could like, load spells into items (can't remember what they're called, enchanters?) it might have worked. Best I managed was holy hand grenades. Extra effective against undead and didn't harm the paladin. Also when playing the SW D20, the Scout and I both had the Evasion talent so we only took half damage from area effect attacks that hit and zero from ones that missed (normally full from hit and half from miss). DM thought it hilarious we fought by dropping thermal detonators at our feet and grappling enemies.

You don't choose it, a lot of palis can even end up hating their duty, but they are divine instruments. You might not want to kill the litch, he'll he could genuinely be doing good deeds, making the lives of his people last eternity in peace, but the palis god says "must smash icky bones" and the pali just goes ham

Thats not really the case though. Paladins are free to use their own judgment. A good example I often see is one where some traditionally evil monster is encountered, but it just wants to be left alone and isnt hurting anyone.

Paladin worked like gangbusters in the Baldur's Gate series. High alaignment gave you discounts and ****, and you got extra lay in hands so you could take a full round action to touch yourself. Lay in hands (bad touch naughty no no) is a **** spell for everyone and even wizards do more damage trying to take out terrasques with their tallywackers than tryna give them the no-no touch until they take the big sleep just because their alignment starts with a minus sign

I've always hated this actually. Isn't it better for someone to devote time, energy, even their life itself to a cause because they choose to, and have that dedication rewarded, rather than have the hand-wavy "destiny" card shoved in their face?

What is better - to be born good or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?

The point is they did choose to. They were "chosen" to be paladins but they could refuse the call essentially. So they choose to, then train and devote their lives to their deity. The ones who didn't heed the call, well they don't get stories written about them.

**** that. I'll make my character any which way I want. I'll make a Lawful Good Tiefling for all I care. The whole point of games like D&D is to be creative and have fun. There should not be any strict way of making a character, playing a class or race, so on and so forth. If we were to follow **** to a T, a lot of characters would end up extremely same-ish and it would all just become incredibly dull after a while.

Tiefling have free will though, they're essentially just humans with extra pointy bits and hereditary abilities AFAIK.

A lawful good tiefling would probably be somewhat of a special case, though, considering that they tend to be outcasts.

I dont think a lot of people get what this is saying, its not that baby comes out pop its a Paladin, its more that someone throughout their life has what it takes to be a Paladin; that deep down inside they are in essence the person fit to be a Paladin.
Ultimately it takes a whole lot of dogoodery inside your system to be a Paladin, and people cant really learn to deep down be a good person, you just have to be that way sort of a thing

i thought of it more like talent scouts, where gods would choose those who's actions and morals most align with their own to give power. so someone could work their hardest to be paladin of a particular god and maybe they would get the chance or maybe trying to get the power would render them inapplicable. meanwhile someone who's never heard of the god could just happen to share the same beliefs and is given power to aid them in a mutual goal

I mean, at least in Pathfinder, they basically have to act as the anti-fun police, unless they want to lose their powers. Can't break the rules, can't witness someone breaking the rules, can't bend the rules, can't even complain about the rules.

This is silly, you're describing either stupid good or stupid lawful, which is how some players or GM demand paladins act, but the class isn't Judge Dredd or Jesus, it's individuals who choose (or are forced) to play them that way.

They have to fight evil and corruption as well as uphold justice and the law, but the paladin gets to choose how they go about it (with a couple of additional rules depending on deity; like always needing to accept surrender or never assume someone is telling the truth unless you know or discover them lying)
