Inés Ramírez Pérez, a woman in rural Mexico, performed an emergency cesarean on herself to save the life of her baby. She had lost a child during childbirth before and was experiencing the same excrutiating pain, and with medical attention hours away, decided to perform surgery herself to try and save the baby. Her other (very young) son ran for a nurse who arrived hours later to find the woman barely conscious, stitched her with cotton sewing thread, and eventually transported the mother to a hospital well outside the town limits. Both the mother and the baby survived, as a direct result of her emergency cesarean.
