LAS VEGAS — The National Rifle Association on Thursday endorsed tighter restrictions on devices that allow a rifle to fire bullets as fast as a machine gun — a rare, if small, step for a group that for years has vehemently opposed any new gun controls.

Twelve of the rifles the Las Vegas gunman, Stephen Paddock, had in a high-rise hotel suite when he opened fire on a crowd on Sunday were outfitted with “bump stocks,” devices that allow a semiautomatic rifle to fire hundreds of rounds per minute, which may explain how he was able to shoot so quickly, killing 58 people and wounding hundreds of others. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has ruled that bump stocks do not violate laws that tightly limit ownership of machine guns, and some lawmakers have called for them to be banned.

The bureau should revisit the issue and “immediately review whether these devices comply with federal law,” the N.R.A. said in a statement released Thursday. “The N.R.A. believes that devices designed to allow semiautomatic rifles to function like fully-automatic rifles should be subject to additional regulations.”

so a device that has been in circulation for years with never having been used in a homicide is used by a deranged lunatic who was not obeying laws. so we have to ban everyone from having them legally?

even though you can make one in just about any metalwork shop in world?

For those that don't know what a 'bump fire stock' is, this should help explain it.

I should point out that bump fire stocks can be had for most any gun that has a stock, but not a bolt-action rifle, or pump action shotgun. In fact, any semi-automatic rifle or shotgun can use a bump fire stock.

This may be the one time I would agree with the suggestion that bump fire stocks should be either banned, or heavily restricted.

I’m pretty familiar with guns in general, but this is the first I’ve heard of a bump stock.

Can you, or anyone else, elaborate on the mechanics that turn a semi-auto into full-auto with the use of a bump stock.

It’s basically just a reciprocating stock, every time a round is fired it extends and collapses by itself, therefore it kinda forces your finger to pull the trigger. It’s not illegal because it still technically fires one bullet the we trigger pull.

There is also the binary fire system, which basically lets you fire two bullets every time you pull the trigger. I’m not too sure how it works but it is pretty cool nonetheless

Technically anything can be bump fired besides the obvious things like manually operated actions like pumps and bolt rifles. This video for example. Bump fire is essentially just taking a non-traditional hold on the gun where you let your trigger hand go totally loose on the grip and instead use your other hand to grip and push forward on the gun. Once you fire one shot the recoil pushes the gun backwards allowing the trigger to come forward and reset while your grip hand pushes the gun back into your trigger finger and repeats from there.The stock simply makes this easier by giving you something to keep your trigger hand on, the stock and grip float almost freely on the buffer tube allowing the recoil and pushing motion to still happen.

it doesn't turn it into full auto. it has more "give" i guess so it springs back from your shoulder, pushing it forward into your finger.

Yes, that's it. You can do it without a specialized stock too, but it's more difficult. Personally I think regulating them sounds like a terrible idea and that all this gun control talk as a result of the shooting is opportunists pushing an agenda but whatever.

Idea: Don't ban possession or production of bump fire stocks, but add them to the NFA. (Also take suppressors off the NFA)

Sounds fine to me. I'm all in for a full on NFA repeal, Hughes amendment and everything. But if it has to continue to exist then this way probably appeases the butthurt progressives and doesn't really take anything away.

Theyre **** anyway. Makes the gun hard to control because you have to push out instead of pull the gun to you. They are fun but the novelty wears off quick when you realize the target you're aiming at is getting a lot harder to hit.
Theyre are really only good for when you want to screw around at a private range, because most ranges don't let anyone fire even somewhat fast

The damn things violate the spirit of the law, just not the letter.
I think we should be able to rent them for some fun at a gun range, but there's too much harm and not enough good that can come of private ownership

Bump stocks require to much to be considered full auto.

A full auto rifle needs to just have the trigger pulled to fire automatically.

Bump fire requires constant pressure of the stock to a solid surface(shoulder). then you need to constantly pull the rifle away from your body with your off hand. then the rifle as an inch of movement and is not accurate even in bursts. it is seriously a gimmick that wastes ammo. It is fun but not practical.

The guy shooting in Vegas would have killed the same if not more people if he just used a regular semi-auto rifle with a regular stock.
