History of the World: FGO Edition

    join list: FriendsOfEmperor (84 subs)
    Mention History

I'm thinking of doing a series of servant bios in chronological order. Might do another one if people are interested.

Wandjina is a type of rain spirit from Worrorra (an Australian Aboriginal group) mythology. The Wandjina are viewed as creator gods, similar to the Rainbow Serpents in other tribes. When a Wandjina dies, it paints its portrait on a cave wall before diving into a nearby watering hole. These paintings are then restored by humans over millennia; some of them have been found to have 40 layers of paint. They reward humans for restoring the paintings by bringing rain and punish criminals by causing natural disasters. These paintings have drawn attention due to their coincidental resemblance to astronauts.
Louhi is the Finnish goddess of death and the literal mother of the world's diseases. She is the main antagonist of the "Kalevala," a 19th-century compilation of ancient Finnish oral myths. She is the witch queen of Pohjola, a kingdom in the underworld. After saving the hero Vainamoinen from certain death, she offers her daughter's hand in marriage in exchange for him forging the sampo, a mysterious and powerful artifact. However, he instead steals the sampo from her, causing her to chase him in the form of a bird, only for his companions to defeat her by cutting off her toes.
Orion was a giant and great hunter from Greek mythology, known for being one of the few male companions of Artemis, the daughter of Zeus and virginal goddess of the hunt. Now, Orion has been summoned as a Servant...except, not really. This "Orion" is actually Artemis, refusing to abandon her true love whether he likes it or not, who accidentally sabotaged the summoning ritual -- the result is that the Servant "Orion" is really Artemis, while the real Orion has been reduced to a weak teddy bear-like creature. As a goddess of nature, Artemis can be vicious when angered -- when the hunter Actaeon saw her bathing nude, she turned him into a deer and had him eaten alive by his own hunting dogs.
Astraea is the Greek goddess of justice and the daughter of Astraeus (personification of dusk) and Eos (personification of dawn), both cousins of Zeus. The kindly virgin goddess was the last of the gods to live among humanity, but she eventually abandoned us due to our wickedness, becoming the constellation Virgo. She is often identified as an aspect of Dike, a more vengeful goddess of justice and the daughter of Zeus and his second wife Themis, the personification of justice. As a Servant, she has possessed the body of Luviagelita Edelfelt, a distinguished young Finnish mage originating from Fate/hollow ataraxia; as a result, she's inherited some of Luvia's personality, such as her rivalry with Rin Tohsaka, which extends to Ishtar, who is possessing Tohsaka's body.

Ubisoft Cancels Civil war Era Assassin Creed Game

In July of last year, word began to trickle through Ubisoft that an ambitious new installment of the company’s top franchise, Assassin’s Creed, had been cancelled.

The new game would have brought the history-spanning series to one of its most modern settings: The American Civil War and, moreso, the Reconstruction period that followed in the 1860s and 1870s.

In this Reconstruction-era Assassin’s Creed, gamers would play as a Black man who had been formerly enslaved in the South and moved west to start a new life. Recruited by the series’ Assassins, he would return to the South to fight for justice in a conflict that would, among other things, see him confront the emergence of the Ku Klux Klan.

That’s according to interviews with five current and former Ubisoft employees who spoke to Game File on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about the project. (Ubisoft did not respond to a request for comment for this story.)

The people were enthusiastic about the game but were also frustrated by its cancellation, which they perceived as Ubisoft bowing to controversy.

Three sources told Game File that word filtered through the company last July that management in Paris had stopped development of the game for two reasons: 1) online backlash that spring to the reveal of Yasuke, a historically-inspired Black samurai, as a protagonist in the company’s then-upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows; and 2) concern that the political climate in the United States was becoming increasingly tense.

“Too political in a country too unstable, to make it short,” one source familiar with the game and its cancellation told Game File.

Game cancellations are not unusual, sources said, but reasons such as those were.

This would-be Assassin’s Creed game was early.
Fellas, I got to say, despite knowing Ubisoft would've been ass at writing compelling characters and making things simplified instead of more grey area subjects, this would have been a way better premise for a Black protagonist.

1829: Five locomotives compete in the Rainhill Trials to prove George Stephenson's argument that the newly invented vehicle would have the best motive power for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway; Stephenson's own Rocket wins.
1856: Chinese marines in Canton seize Arrow, a cargo ship flying the British flag, on suspicion of piracy, arresting twelve of its fourteen Chinese crew members. The Arrow incident would later be used as a pretext for the Second Opium War between several western powers and China.
1871: Slash-and-burn land management, months of drought, and the passage of a strong cold front cause the Peshtigo Fire, the Great Chicago Fire and the Great Michigan Fires to break out on the same night. The Peshtigo Fire was the deadliest wildfire in recorded history, killing somewhere between 1500 and 2500 people.
1918: Corporal Alvin C. York kills 28 German soldiers and captures 132, an action for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor. York would eventually become the most highly decorated soldier of World War I.

    Das not orky

In an age where massed broadsides were the accepted meta of naval warfare, British captain Philip Broke was a bit of an odd duck.

He believed in a new fangled idea called "aiming".
Captain Broke was infamously particular about which guns he fitted. He would put them in odd places, higher up on deck, to give them better firing angles. And he would drill his men relentlessly in gunnery.

This crazy new strategy was put to the test during the war of 1812, when Captain Broke's ship came under attack by the USS Chesapeake.

Blitzing in, in order to unleash her devastating broadside, the Chesapeake soon found her masts blown off.
Then her helmsman was blown in two.
    Then her replacement helmsman exploded.
Then her wheel was shot away (in case she had any more helmsmen.)

Anyways, the official state portrait of Captain Philip Broke is him looking rather smug in front of a gun for some reason.
