I'm convincing a couple of my buddies to run a CoC campaign that basically sums up to

>Wild West Supernatural
>Setting has had spooks, werewolves, vamps, wendigos, et cetera, for centuries, and they're well known and studied by the few, small groups that hunt them. But as of late, as America expanded west, their numbers spiked, with new, unknown **** crawling out of the woodworks
>Players are a group of amature gunmen that for one reason or another, decide to group together and go out and hunt down one of these critters

>Players have to decide what they're going to do as they uncover more details revealing that God is real, he is as far from benevolent as many think he is, that he is the creeping voice on your vision in your fleeting moments of life
>Angels are real, but are not as eldritch, but their spawn is which is the monsters that attack humans. The sudden rise of their numbers if basically God raising his own army
>A long since dead group of hunters basically came back as revenants and are raising the dead from the Civil War, the Revolution, the War of 1812, and from a few other conflicts, to go shove a fist up God's ass, with assistance from the Devil who is just as bat **** eldritch as God as he was God's attempt at making a stone so heavy he couldn't lift it, but rather as a being that could kill him

Thus far, they're really intrigued by the setting, and the idea of basically becoming their own in world versions of Johnny Ringo, Doc Holiday, Billy the Kid, or Calamity Jane, but are hesitant because we've never run a CoC campaign and it'd be kind of RP heavy.

Perspective. To a lot of the common people, he was a hero. And it's not like the empire he was fighting against was so great. At one point, they, my daughter included, suggested putting my head on a spike to goad him into a reckless attack and end his rebellion. which is the point at which I defected and swore revenge against the empire that had turned my daughter into a heartless bitch to whom only duty and honor matters

Well you choosing to state that he's a a terrorist rather than freedom fighter or some such put him in a bad perspective from my eyes. And him trying to make a better world for me makes it seem like he doesn't give a single **** about anyone else.

And on the other hand little miss gleaming paragon daughter, despite her hatred for me personally, doesn't really sound like a matricidal heartless bitch.

Next time you introduce someone to a dilemma give them the full info from the start.

He didn't give a **** about anyone else. They just kinda wound up following him and glorifying him because they wanted the world he envisioned for me, and he accepted their help because he needed the strength of their numbers. He was pretty good at first, and then desperation to win when it became clear he didn't have a chance drove him to make alliances with some seriously ****** up allies that freely slaughtered, enslaved, raped, and spread plague and famine to weaken the empire, all with the idea of achieving their own ends, and he considered that acceptable if it gave me my new world where I would no longer suffer. me trying to drive a wedge between him and these manipulative, clearly evil allies is ultimately why our rebellion failed though and she was a paragon, of the empire. In the eyes of the empire and her, I was a dishonorable, dishonest, disgrace and meant nothing next to the continuity of the empire. although she didn't need a reason to want to kill me and only didn't because the super strict, rigid customs of the empire say to respect your parents
I realize my initial descriptions of them didn't fully illustrate the situation, but I wasn't out to write paragraphs on their characters in that first comment

In one game our party stayed at a demented old wizard's castle. We were basically doing a "sidequest" to rid the desert of ghouls, and the castle and the surrounding lands were suspiciously devoid of undead.

We had a walk around the wizard's land and noticed that everything is healthier and stronger than anywhere else, especially just outside the borders. Once we entered the castle proper and met the owner for the first time I as a wizard sensed powerful magical energy flowing from the old lord. Turns out he was destabilizing the magical ambience in his land to make his villagers happier, but the aura outside got unstable too, just in the opposite way - the dead buried in sand started rising as ghouls.

I was informed that fixing unstable aura would stop corpses from rising on their own but it wouldn't affect existing undead. At that point we thought it would be a pretty standard procedure - we assassinate the wizard and let the locals deal with the remaining ghouls. That's what we did - we managed to poison the wizard with slow acting poison so that his servants would think he died naturally in his sleep, then we just walked out in the morning.

When we reached the village DM started describing how ghouls slaughtered most of the villagers, and those who survived until morning were waiting for their death in terror. I suggested fighting the undead but we were soon overwhelmed and had to run away. Our fighter then roleplayed having PTSD triggered by undead for the rest of that game.

It was all because we wanted to join a caravan.

I had an evil character who was working with a mostly good party, some neutrals too I think.
BBEG tried to get me to join him and rule the world together or die with my party.
Characters response; "Are you nuts? Even if you're hiding a dragon under those gay robes we're about to wipe the floor with you. Why would I switch teams to the losing side? Besides **** ruling the world, I saw how much that dumbass king has to work, that's basically drawing a line on my neck and telling those dirt munching peasants to get the axe."
Remember folks, evil doesn't mean stupid. Telepath teammate was able to detect my character also actually liked the party more than the BBEG and would have more fun killing the villain.

Hardest decision I made was to throw a knife. Our 2 man party had been the victims of an assassination attempt by a gang that we fought of with the help of a bartender and our pet dog. Luckily one of the dead guys wasn't quite dead and we accidentally discovered this and tied him up for questioning.
After getting some minor plot relevant information my character, who was at least somewhat stupid, but wise, pulled the other guy away so we could talk about what we were going to do without him hearing us. My buddy, a Paladin went into a long winded speech that I was forbidden from interrupting while I noticed our captive straining against the ropes.
I was unable, again forbidden, from shouting, interrupting, or otherwise walking away from the Pally so I ended up throwing a knife at him for intimidation.
The DAM made it clear that a recently unconscious level 1 thing would die if I hit him and asked me where I was aiming. I just rolled, so far it's been the only real 20 I've gotten.
Anyways the thug pissed his pants and we finished getting information from him.

Then we all died in the next dungeon, including the captive thug whom we had locked in the bartenders wine cellar, where he starved.

Basically he has no knowledge but has street smarts. I probably should have said clever.

My reason for doing this was it was my introduction to DnD, so I needed a character that could be reasonably clueless about what kind of monster we were fighting and how magic works.

I could go into more detail about this but the point is he didn't have book smarts so he would punch an undead in the face while insulting it's non-existent family, but after the second time it resurrects he would recognize that cutting of it's head would probably help it stay dead-er.

And I didn't metagame with him, like he thought dogs were horses so he did a lot of stupid stuff due to overconfidence, basically I would recognize it would be totally stupid but I should do it anyways because it's what he would have done.

I could go into more detail if you want. He didn't last long but he was still my longest lasting character to date.

Ok so.
Riley the Rogue, I know I'm so great with names, was a rather punk kid in a small humans only racist ass farm town. As a younger kid he looked up to his superior adolescents, or just anyone taller than him, and would often tell blatant lies to appear in higher standing with them.
Hang on I'm gonna switch to my desktop.

One of these lies during a particularly strange conversation was the non sequitur that changed his life forever.
"I live at the orphanage."
His "friends" stopped their conversation and prepared to call him out on his ********. They knew he had parents, they'd seen them. And the Riley family wasn't even poor relative to the rest of the town.
Heck his parents were influential members of the town's equivalent of the KKK. People loved them!
But the smarter one of the group decided to shut Riley up in a way that would teach him to stop lying.
"Aw cool man. Hey since you live there you wouldn't happen to be able to get a copy of their stamp would you?" I forget why exactly I thought stamps in DnD worked like signet rings in Egypt but roll with me for a second.
The orphanage, as a protected property under the current kingdom following a wizard civil war, long story that was the DM's plot that Riley intentionally didn't know about and I mostly forgot by this point , had its own official seal, easily recognized by a distinctive logo. The reproduction of this seal was heavily regulated by the kingdom only to such protected businesses and buildings. As such, these stamps were rare and even the most corrupt black market official wouldn't dare distribute these stamps to the general public.
To clarify there were several official seals, and stamps. This one was for charity businesses, I think the others were for religious, regal, and the Ministry of Defense against magic or something.
So Riley, not even understanding why this seal was so important, agreed to steal the seal from the orphanage. In a heist that I actually planned out to almost have its own campaign but ended up making really simple just because Riley was still a kid and likely wouldn't have done anything too impressive.
So basically, he propped open a door, gained the trust of the nanny, and snuck into a central office, which unfortunately became locked on the other side. While looking for seal, and a key, he came across a piece of paper that had the official seal on it when he heard the door being opened from the other side.
The kid cut his losses and jumped out the office window (luckily 1st or 2nd story) still clutching the paper. He returned to his crew defeated and showed them the paper that he couldn't read but on which he had recognized the seal.

It was the deed to the orphanage.
It was about that time his friends started to really see him as an asset, and overtime Riley gradually became inducted into the haphazard and frankly terrible gang of racist kids in a racist farm town known as the Red Rascals. Now, Riley was still a low ranking member of this gang, as he was young and no one in the crew would ever specifically call him a necessary member. So he didn't know it.
He was just a kid following a crowd of brothers and sisters that he looked up to. Make no mistake he was an asshole, with a temper as fiery as his red hair, And he was rash as they come, the vigorous blood of youth flowed through him.

Uh, then a time-skip happens during which they pull minor kid related heists, such as returning the deed after nearly inadvertedly getting the orphanage shut down. Also a cow heist, joyriding horses, and messing with politicians, especially foreign ones like those dirty elves and dwarves. Which wasn't hard since the whole town already hated them.
However at the apex of his youth, Riley was 16. They had become more daring and began to truly take out their angst on the race they hated most. The robbed elf caravans. Successfully, too. More than a few roaming parties learned to avoid back roads lest they be jumped by a gang of children.

I forgot to mention that Riley had learned to read at this point, as well as gained the skill of theives Cant or whatever 5th Ed calls it.
What he hadn't learned to read was the body language of elves. As a traditionally beautiful and proud race, they all look like old dudes or young women. So you could really only tell ages based on how they acted, which becomes especially difficult at night from a nearby tree.
Riley, being the instigator of most ambushes by this point, decides to jump on the big guy at the front wagon for intimidation. And ******* kills an old man elf in one poor landing.
Not even having seen a dead body of anything bigger than an insect before, much less a humanoid one, Riley is notably freaked out. His friends even more, fleeing the scene immediately. And man are the elves, known by the town as a very forgiving race, are rightly pissed off that an elder was just killed.
The elves are throwing arrows and magic and vulgarities and no one in the Red Rascals even speaks "point ear'd speak" so they just book it.
Riley takes the hint and also books it, but in the direction opposite the town, and he never stopped running.
Until he ran into the plot that is. Being hired to guard a caravan of goods, ironically.
That wasn't planned btw the DM just kinda threw that one on me, but it mostly worked out.

Yeah so that's his backstory, I had been working on it for over a year, and there were plenty of alternate paths it could take depending on where it needed to finish for whatever the DM had planned. He was originally going to get caught and go to various prisons to escape during an attack as an adult for a different friends campaign but they canned it.

Also I ended up using his town as the backstory for another character, one just as racist but out for revenge at the Elves retaliation on her city. She's just one of many pre-made characters I have as I really don't enjoy reusing characters and I join a lot of doomed games.
I think it was at a FJers recommendation that I just make a bunch of different characters so I can just pick one for joining a new game, too.

As always, I could go into more detail on some of his specific interactions in the campaign but it didn't last long so there's very little to talk about and most of it was pathetic, even for Riley. Riley btw was not badass, just had a form of fearlessness when he felt his reputation as a Rascal was threatened, and later, his reputation in the party.

Reminds me of that time I was so full of feelings of heroism and sacrifice that i killed my unaware past self instead of killing the vulnerable future villain who was being rescued by my past self.
Good thing both options actually led to the same conclusion.
