A 'Mech as powerful as possible, as impenetrable as possible, and as ugly and foreboding as conceivable, so that fear itself will be our ally.
- Aleksandr Kerensky.
Possibly the best known Battlemech to terrorize the battlefields of the 31st century, the ATLAS has come to personify the idea of the implacable march of death. Designed in 2755 with specifications from the legendary Aleksandr Kerensky, the Atlas was intended for use by the Star League Defense Force.
The Atlas was built with one thing in mind; Uncompromising superiority and brutality in the face of any threat. To that end, the 'Mech succeeded with flying colours, and the Atlas has become an image sufficient to give pause to even the most hardened of veterans.
Despite its prolific use and his role in its design, few Atlas pilots followed Kerensky into exodus, resulting in many being left in Inner Sphere hands.
The Atlas quickly became the standard of the Assault class of 'Mechs. Armed with a payload capable of engaging directly and indirectly from all ranges, the Atlas is virtually never caught out of position.
At long range, the Atlas assails its target with a withering barrage from a 20-rack of FarFire Maxi-Rack Long Ranged Missiles from the left side-torso. Two tons of ammunition allow for respectable endurance in sustained fighting, assuming hostilities haven't ended from spending the ordinance.
At close range, the Atlas is armed with the savage Defiance 'Mech Hunter 20/class Autocannon, fitted with two tons of ammunition. Though this model lacks a cooling jacket and is prone to heat concerns, the cannon is more than capable of brutalizing anything unfortunate to register in the pilot's targeting systems.
Mounted in either arm and in the rear are four Defiance B3M Medium Lasers, providing a respectable and sustainable punch to support the AC/20, and to thwart attempts at flanking actions. A 6-rack of Thunderstroke Short Ranged Missiles add in addition punch alongside the opportunity to find gaps and holes in armour plating.
Furthermore, the Atlas is built with a pair of hand actuators and battlefists, which combined with its titanic 100 ton weight is more than enough to crush opponents in hand-to-hand combat.
The Atlas is protected by an obscene nineteen tons of Durallex Heavy Special armour plating, making it one of the most difficult 'Mechs to bring down. Twenty Standard Heat Sinks ensure the Atlas runs fairly cool in combat, doubly so in capable hands.
The Atlas' one true weakness is its pitiful foot speed. Stocked with a Vlar 300 Fusion Engine, the Atlas strides into combat at a thundering but ponderous 54/kph. Many 'Mechs can defend themselves against the Atlas by merely not engaging it, and out-running it.
The infamous "Death's Head" ******* assembly was deliberate, so that the 'Mech could act as a beacon of sheer horror for those unfortunate enough to face one in battle. Spacious and well-equipped, the 'Mech can even deploy a mobile satellite dish for orbital communications, which can be stored beneath protective plating when not in use.
