So? He plays it well, it's a difficult instrument. If he went up there and played it as well on a violin or cello or whatever you want, it'd still be more talent than some of the half-assed card tricks or pop singers you normally get at these shows.

Is it a difficult instrument though? It seems essentially the same as playing any other bowed instrument but instead of fingering you bend the saw.

It's significantly harder seeing as he (assumedly) discovered the effect himself and invented the "instrument" in that form, then was able to map out the exact manner of bending the saws to create notes in the exact notes and pitches, then was able to play an entire, beautiful song with it. And don't forget, a woodwind has markings and a bowed instrument has places to denote notes - this saw must be bent and there's no way to check your fingering - it's all memory.

You also have to note though that on these shows they aren't actually testing who is more talented at what they do they are testing who is more entertaining. Especially since the prize usually involves some kind of sponsored show business.

Even if he is a master of his craft if he can't find ways to make it more entertaining than everyone else he ends up losing in the end.
