I don't know. That's why history is mostly a pointless science. In school you should learn your language, basic maths, basic history. Integrals, years for all the wars, etc. is just pointless knowledge, knowing that WW1 and WW2 is a thing that happened 50-100 years ago is enough, knowing when and what exactly has happened is completely pointless knowledge, to me it's same as knowing 129th digit of Pi. It's worth nothing in real world.

A lot of what they teach in history is pointless, things like just learning specific dates of every little thing or how many miles of land was in the Louisiana Purchase. The important things that should be learned from history is what happened and why, and the reasoning behind it rather than specific trivia question tier knowledge.

To be honest, most of the stuff I know of history was learned from watching the history channel as a kid rather than school.

I never liked the idea of memorising stupid stuff like dates.

however, knowing what happened, and the order, and the reasons, the major players, the story - if you will. that's what matters in history.

I don't think there's much to be gained from memorising history dates, but I think there's a great deal to be gained from learning history.

i agree to an extent, but i also think learning more in depth about really important events like the French Revolution and WW2 particularly hitler's rise to power is extremely important because those events are crucial to learn from and they ended up shaping the entire world drastically not africa when they happened

Depends on the teacher. If you learn about HOW events came to pass--about the political and social climate that led to the best and worst events in human history, about cause-and-effect on a global scale, and about and what you as an individual can do to contribute to the world--then history class is great.

If you have a ******, unmotivated teacher who just makes you memorize names and dates, that's very different.

History is a bad example for your point because it serves as a good case study for deeper philosophical and political questions and truths. Knowing the USSR existed isn't enough, knowing it killed millions and the way it repressed it's population is critical. Reading the gulag archipelago and having a comprehensive view of the real world effects of previously political and social movements is a very important when someone suggests communism is good for your country.

**anonymous rolled image** Honestly, if you aren't using the values on a daily basis then you shouldn't needed to memorize them. Even then its only to make work go slightly faster, and if you really were using it on a daily basis after a while you would have memorized the value already.
There's no point for forced memorization for, a test or something since the students will probably forget a week later. The only advantage would be speed of work. Not having students spend time memorizing values lets them spend more time doing things of actual value to them or academically.

To be honest I don't really see a problem with neither the milliard counting system nor the MM/DD/YY system, as these are merely shifts in position. The Imperial unit system on the other hand introduces completely new conversions to an optimized System. While this is ok in normal cases (measuring ones height, measuring some volume,...) , it gets unbearable as soon as you combine multiple units for scientific works (viscosity, pressure,...). I'm aware that both systems are taught in American schools, but in my opinion the Imperial system simply serves no purpose. I often read the argument that it's more intuitive, but that's probably mostly out of habit. Also I don't really understand what you are trying to tell me in the second part of your comment. Are you agreeing that MM/DD/YY has it's problems or are you accusing me of not using it correctly? I'm sorry, I honestly can't tell.

The only issue with the milliard system is that practically the only place in the world left that uses it is Germany. Scotland dropped that **** decades ago, lads. It's time to let it go.

And I'm not necessarily agreeing with you, but I'm pointing out that ****** logic on abbreviations can be a double-edged sword. I have no problem with dropping the milliard system, but to be honest I've never met somebody that criticized it so I've had the impression, that nobody cared about it. It's only used to count things like money or people and if it was meant to follow the same pattern as all other units neither milliard nor billion would be correct (It should be something like a "giga"). Regarding the dropping of st's, nd's, rd's, and th's: If you translated the dates directly from german you'd simply end up with something like 1st April or 19th August. For you it might look funny but this is the way Germans (and the other DD/MM/YY countries) are used to it. Lastly I think the time is ordered by relevance, so (for most people) the most important time-unit is somewhere between hour and day. Everything else is depending in priority and therefore written behind it. You could argue that for some people the month is more important than the day, but I think that would be a minority and it also breaks the symmetry of the system which makes it a bit harder to understand.

This also kinda shows how stupidly complicated the imperial system of measurements is. There's no consistency in divisibility, even in the same kind of measurements. That's why I say we should convert to metric. It's simpler to divide it because it's just "slap a prefix and you can translate it by merely moving a decimal point.

the thing is the arbitrary of metric disappeared the moment it became self-regulating, a gram and a meter and a litre are linked by their relation to volumes of water, the gram is moving faster and faster towards becoming a constant measurement by mathematical certainty and short of the laws of physics or nature of gravity changing it holds up as the pillar on which all units may stand.

Everyone overstates the value of the easier math in the face of what is the metric system's current strongest aspect, its relationship with other metric units
