Since there's the upcoming movie Krampus, i just wanted to tell you a bit about the austrian and bavarian folklore of the Krampus
While Saint Nicholas hands out some small presents to "good" children, Krampus comes for the bad ones and takes them with him in his wooden back carrier.
During November and December, so called "Krampusläufe" take place in many villages, where groups of Krampusse walk through the streets and usually chase young people with rods and twigs.
Over the centuries, the tradition of Krampus and Perchten, demonic costumes from pagan times to drive away the ghosts of the winter, mixed.
They appear in groups called Pass
Unfortunatelly, Krampus and Perchten were commercialized over the last few years. Many german and dutch tourists were injured from horns or chains, due to wrong behaviour.
As a result, safety got more important and fences to seperate crowd and Krampusse are common nowadays.
I just wanted to let you know about this tradition, that might be older than christianity itself, before it might get too for-profit after a movie.
