Here we go: join list: englmanOC (685 subs)Mention Clicks: 20562Msgs Sent: 93767Mention History In this pic I chalked the roughest side of the blade to show how much I had to grind away.Boring grinding done, it's now awesomely knife-shaped.Getting the forge heated up to forge. Some old tong-blanks that didn't turn out right getting re-purposed for the blackened steel pieces in the handle. My anvil, with a layer of rust due to the gloriously high Tennessee humidity. After it got a bit darker outside I put some refractory clay on the blade and normalized the steel. (hopefully)Today was BUTT FRICKIN' COLD after just having snowed unexpectedly and I almost couldn't get the forge lit because my hands hurt so bad, but I did and got these beautiful pictures.Such forge.Much hot.So I wanted to do an oil quench this time since the water quench probably cracked my last knife. I went to get my peanut oil and it looked like a bucket of camel cum because it was so cold. So heated up a big piece of steel and sat it in the oil until it was heated to liquid again.Knife after heat-treatment. Now here's why the week got frustrating: 1)- Knife didn't harden enough and has a slight curve to the left, I'll need to straighten it, redo my heat-treatment, and quench in water. 2)- Lost two or three days of work due to various things. 3)- Handle has fought me every step and I've decided to just use 16-gauge sheet steel instead of the thicker parts I was originally considering. This will result in a much thinner handle. But oh well, it's a kitchen knife not a machete lol.
