I cut out ~96% of this video lmao
WOO, the knife successfully survived heat-treatment. I didn't temper the knife though, because after removing the fire-scale, I Rockwell hardness tested it again and it turns out it was already ~52-55HRC. My guess is that it basically tempered itself post-quench after being removed from the oil early(to correct a minor warp).
Here I've put the final grind and edge on. Sucker turned out sharp and I was able to establish my lines even better than before
Now it's time to put some fingernail polish on the edge to protect it during the ferric-chloride etch
This will darken the steel and help prevent rust
After the etch, I neutralize the acid on the blade with water and then begin cleaning it with some light hand-sanding(600grit) and isopropyl alcohol.
Gat dang that turned out pretty.
It accented all the lines EXACTLY how I was hoping it would too
Next, I put some 3-in-1 oil on it, let the knife "soak" in that for roughly 24 hours, then wipe away the excess. Between this and the etch, the knife should be effectively "water-proof."
Remember that complex-ass wrap?
Time to do that again.
After a few hours of wrapping, I'm finally done and ready to tie the knot at the end. After tying the knot, I lightly "flame" the whole thing to harden the paracord and making it melt together a bit. Any lighter works great for this
THIS SNOW COULDN'T HAVE BEEN MORE APPROPRIATELY TIMED.
What a great way to end the Glacier Bay build: With glacial weather.
I felt I had to take some pictures with the original lol
And some comparison pictures for those that are curious about the exact differences.
THAT'S IT FOR THIS PROJECT!
I hope you all enjoyed it, I had a fantastic time with this nostalgic build and I'm really proud of it as well. I can feel my quality and control getting better with each thing I make and I LOVE that so much.
Thank you all so much for your support, you really motivate me to keep pursuing my dream of one-day making this a larger portion of my life
I'll see you all next week with something different! Until then, have a wonderful weekend FunnyJunk
