Police in Rio Crush 40,000 Guns

Tens of thousands of illegal firearms have been destroyed in central Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Brazilian officials crush tens of thousands firearms under a road-roller.
Using a specially adapted road-roller, the weapons, which had already been burned, were crushed before a white sheet was draped over them in a ceremony to mark the success of the city's anti-firearms taskforce on World Arms Destruction Day on July 9.
The unit has been hard at work since being set up in May, seizing an astonishing 1200 guns every single day, and anticipating over 120,000 seizures by the end of the year.
With the World Cup approaching in 2014 and the Olympics two years later, authorities in the city are desperate to show they are coming down hard on unregistered firearms, of which there are millions in the country, many used in violent crimes.
Most of the weapons destroyed in this ceremony were pistols and lighter hand weapons - however, grenade launchers, assault rifles, and even anti tank and air missiles are a common sight on the streets of the city's poorer districts.
