Well, there is a reason why they do it. It's simply because they will drown no matter what since they can't breed while the ground is filled with water.
So they crawl up in hope of surviving.

Worms don't ******* surface because "they would drown" - that makes no ******* sense as earthworms breathe through their skin and require moisture in the soil to do so. How ******* stupid do you have to be? They are already above ground where the air supply is limited so naturally, they wouldn't breathe like other animals.

There are several hypotheses on this and they all range from: the drumming noise of rain hitting the ground resembles vibrations from predators such as moles; it's easier to travel above ground during rainfall/wet soil so it's done for traveling/migration purposes; it's done for mating purposes for some obscure reason.

TL;DR People who think worms do it to avoid drowning are ******* idiots, who can't think beyond their own toes.

I don't think I've ever seen someone so passionate about worm behavior.

They do breath air, just like us, and just like us. . . try to avoid drowning when possible.
When the dirt they live in is flooded suddenly, where else to they have to but up?

When you split one of those worms they live like 2 different beings, that's how they reproduce!

I know it's been posted but I always wanted to use this picture. They go to the surface to avoid drowning. I allways try to pick them up and put them on a dry surface so they might live..
