The numbers are against anyone who thinks Lionel Messi is anything short of the most incredible player of his generation (yes, including Ronaldo).

I enjoy how the opposing team's strategy involve cascading Messi with defenders every time he gets the ball so he'll pass the ball away and when his teammates score, every one complains that Messi isn't even good, he is getting like no goals
#61 to #14 - hkkkkkk (07/15/2014) [-]
What people also don't understand is that sometimes the defense is so focused on Messi that they ignore the other players or leave open spaces

Messi and Christiano Ronaldo are the only players in the world that can assist a goal by standing completely still

Usually when people get marked like him they dont get to pass the ball in the direction they want. He would create MUCH more if he wasnt marked like he was.

Messi did not even try to play good, he did not run at all. If he does not have the ball, he will just walk, nothing more.

He messied up the freekick in the last 10 minutes though, and his game was way messier than his teammates, therefore he didn't deserve best player award.

How to tell if you only saw America's last World Cup game: You think Tim Howard is the best goalie ever

Seriously, I'm tired of these bandwagons praising him as a god goalie. Yeah he's good, but let's be honest, nobody gave a digestive end product during the qualification rounds or the group rounds, but as soon as they heard they made it to the top 16, every American watched that game.

User avatar #65 to #51 - sasa (07/15/2014) [-]
Simple.

He is just an arrogant prick. And we don't care how good of a football player you are. If you are a stupid prick, you are a stupid prick. That simple. Arrogant intense bodyloveing backpassage he is dayum. And as a German I say that this Rodriguez deserved the Golden ball
User avatar #69 to #65 - themilkisdead (07/15/2014) [-]
I respect you're opinion, and I'm sorry that your angry, but what did he exactly do?
User avatar #71 to #69 - sasa (07/15/2014) [-]
If you see his development over time.

You know. What do you become when people ttell you every day you are the best no one can stop you and so on.

You actually get cocky about it. And it just how his attidude and personality changed over the years. He is like the complete opposite over e.g. Christiano Ronaldo. That dude is throwing money at poor Kids like there is no tomorrow.

Messi is a pretty self-centered guy, which I think is the main problem. You will never see that he passes a ball infront of the goal to another player (like the Germans) he tries to score even when he know that the shot will miss.

And thats why Argentina lost......and because I hate Higuain and the number 20... I don't remember the name...but thats my personal opinion
User avatar #79 to #71 - megaton ONLINE (07/15/2014) [-]
but i was watching the game on sunday and i saw messi pass the ball while near the goal a bunch of times. 5 to be specific and every time i saw him do that the person who he was passing th ball to wasnt paying attention and missed out on a chance to take an on goal kick.
User avatar #81 to #79 - sasa (07/15/2014) [-]
That is actually True. But he had to start doing that. Otherwise there would've been no chance for Argentina...okay they hadn't got a chance in the firstplace but anyway

>>König Fußball!
User avatar #75 to #71 - themilkisdead (07/15/2014) [-]
I guess, but no matter how arrogant he was, you had to at least feel pity for him when he had to take that free-kick. Millions of people just counting on you to make sure you do what's right, puts a lot of pressure on you.
#140 to #51 - yodawgiheard (07/15/2014) [-]
Because he didn't deserve the golden ball.

Dude scored 4 goals, which is tied for 5th with Neymar and Van Persie. James Rodriguez scored 6, leading Colombia to the QF's. He ACTUALLY led them out. Messi didn't even score in a knockout round, and had ONE assist. Wow, so great from the best player in the world.

He's gotten worse and worse since the group stage, and the fact that he turned in his most anonymous performance in the Final is the final nail in the "no ******* way did Messi deserve the Golden Ball" coffin.

Rodriguez was top goalscorer, Mascherano had a better final and more consistent performances (I know, non-goalscorers never get it, but I'm just pointing it out), Muller scored more and actually did things in the knockout stages. Klose broke the record despite never once playing a full game, Schurrle scored 3 in the knockout rounds, and Neymar carried his team way harder than Messi to the Semi's (A Messi-carried team was able to muster up zero offense in the knockout rounds).

Hence why people don't think he deserved the ball. He won because he was the most famous player left in the tournament, held in his home region (South America). Scoring vs. Iran =/= anything special.

Hence the hate.
User avatar #141 to #140 - themilkisdead (07/15/2014) [-]
But that isn't his fault, it's not like he chose to have the golden ball. I don't see why people hate him for receiving an award, he couldn't control receiving in the first place.
#142 to #141 - yodawgiheard (07/15/2014) [-]
He didn't give it back, did he? He didn't say that he didn't deserve it. It's simple stuff. If I get the medal of honor for sitting on my ass browsing FJ, people will hate the people who gave me the medal AND ME. If I never give it back or indicate that I wasn't worthy, people who think that I didn't deserve the medal will continue to hate me.
User avatar #143 to #142 - themilkisdead (07/15/2014) [-]
Okay whilst I respect your opinion, that "medal of honour" metaphor doesn't work. Not trying to be offensive, or anything I'm just trying to say to me that doesn't seem to fit what's going on here.

Also, why would he give it back? That's even more disrespectful. That's spitting directly in the face of the people who thought you were worthy enough to be awarded that. There are times when you can be modest, but being too modest can come across as offensive, and perhaps maybe he never got the chance, at the time.

Also concerning your metaphor just because other people would hate you, in a certain situation. Does not mean you should always hate others in that certain situation.

Let me change your metaphor for you actually. Say you were a soldier, and your friend was also a soldier with you. He sacrifices himself to save you, and in turn gets paralysed from the waist down for life however you were the one to get the medal. Yes, you would believe people would hate you, but you wouldn't want to be hated. No one would.

Now imagine the roles were reversed. You sacrificed yourself, and you become paralysed from the waist down. Your friend got the medal. Would you hate that friend? Would you desire that medal?

Honestly (I don't think my metaphor was actually better. Sorry about that.) you can have whatever opinion, I won't judge you. But I just don't see why we should hate a man because of the award he was granted and not his characteristics?

Argentina's (The team that came second, if you missed that.) entire World Cup was based on passing to Messi, having him draw 2-3 players around himself and/or getting past 2-3 players by himself, thereby leaving the rest of his team with time and space. Messi carried Argentina to the final.

DI Maria carried the team, not Messi. Without Di Maria they were and are digestive end product. Messi was digestive end product 90% of the time. He did not even try to play good, he did not even run, he was running only when he had the ball. Everyone says he was digestive end product. Everyone tried to pass him the ball, that is why he scored that much. Like there we no other players, just Messi.
User avatar #108 to #83 - DiAnonLord (07/15/2014) [-]
Di Maria was a good player, he wasn't the one carrying the team, not by a longshot. In any case that would be Mascherano instead of Messi. Also, Messi ALWAYS plays like that, he always walks when he doesn't need to run

But mainly, it wasn't any ONE player who carried the entire team, maybe it was in group phase by Messi but in the last few games we played extraordinarily well because we were a team, and there wasn't any one player that was doing all the work
User avatar #119 to #108 - strallee (07/15/2014) [-]
" we played extraordinarily well " dude, you were **** the whole cup.
Messi does not play like that. He tried always his best, but this year that is not the case. He did not run, unless he gets the ball. He was not like that. No he is just lazy, and everyone played for him, and he played for no one.
User avatar #121 to #119 - DiAnonLord (07/15/2014) [-]

you really think that a team can get to the final of the world cup out of luck? vs the netherlands both teams were on the same level and vs germany it was pretty much the same level too, germany gaining an upper hand throughout the latter part of the game.

Although I agree that a keeper being at a team they are obviously too good for doesn't help them. Just look at Jaaskelainen for Bolton. Easily one of the best keepers in the premier league and still at Bolton so he didn't really get that chance to shine.

But still Tim Howard isn't incredible just good.
