Steam mods are mods that are directly uploaded to steam workshop. Nexus mods were the old way of getting mods and still is the best.

First you go to google and look up Skyrim Nexus, it will be the first link. You will need two things to make the mods work properly and another for fixing errors.

The first one is called Nexus Mod Manager (NMM) which is found on the site and is easily downloaded and installed onto your computer. The other important one is Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE) which adds new scripts into Skyrim's chache. Why would you need this? You don't, unless if you get an advanced mod that makes you do things that the game you normally couldn't possibly make in it. To install SKSE you have to drop it into your Skyrim folder where you installed it to. You can find it here skse.silverlock.org/ The last of the three is called BOSS, which is an application that will find if any of your mods installed conflict with each other. Here is the link for that code.google.com/p/better-oblivion-sorting-software/

As for how to install mods, it is extremely easy. The NMM makes it that mods are a single click download and a single click install. When you find a mod you want, you download via manager which 95% of the mods have that capability. After it is done downloading, you go to your NMM application and click on the tab at the top saying "mods" and click the mods you wish to activate. Click on the plugins tab after it is done activating and make sure the mod is enabled. If you get a SKSE mod (which all of the really good ones have it) you will be forced to launch via NMM which forces skyrim to launch with SKSE. If you launch normally those mods will not work and will cause errors inside the game.

A suggestion for finding good mods on the Nexus. Go to the top on the website, mouse over files, and click on 'Files of the Month'. Those are the highest rated files for that month, and are generally the best mods out there.

Enjoy.
