If the universe is infinite, then there could be an infinite amount of areas to support life. If Earth is the only place in the entire, ever-expanding universe, then slap my ass and call me a Twinkie.

the universe is expanding from a point of origin. Its larger can we can possibly comprehend but not infinite. Its one of those things people hear but is wrong
#87 - John Cena (06/06/2015) [-]
That's one theory. We really don't know if the universe is infinite or not. All we know is the observable universe, which has parts moving towards and parts moving away from us.
User avatar #81 - celerant (06/06/2015) [-]
But it might continue to expand. Unless big crunch.

The biggest problems in physics is that the two most dominant theories, quantum mechanics and general relativity, can't be reconciled. were this really comes to terms is in dealing with infinities. I could go though the whole thing but the short version is the universe may not be as big (infinite) or as old(13.8 billion) as the big bang model predicted. As alot of the science that the theories were based off of have been proven incorrect.

here is a page if you wanna know more
www.livescience.com/49958-theory-no-big-bang.html

Now I said all that to say this that makes the odds of finding duplication sets much, much smaller. And are not guaranteed.
#181 - John Cena (06/07/2015) [-]
Ahh I remember discussion of that on physics.stackexchange. The conclusion I got from it was that there are several choices the author could make (I remember hearing something like "It's not clear to me that bohmian paths are the correct ones to choose"?) and that while it was good/real physics, it's nothing conclusive or too groundbreaking.

Anyways, your picture gives the wrong impression. Please see John Rennie's post here: physics.stackexchange.com/a/136861/12029 And in fact, Stephen Hawking's book "The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time" assumes a boundaryless universe in most places. (That book is about forty years old now, for reference)

Well I think I have to say that your statement is not really relevant, in the article you posted it did say that they knew that the universe was small, dense and hot.
"The fact that there's a hot fireball at very early times: that is confirmed," Brandenberg told Live Science. "When you try to go back all the way to the singularity, that's when the problems arise." Seeing as life might have trouble developing in this state whether or not
there was a Big Bang, that is why I'm not sure this is relevant.

We can continue this in a little while. I am now on a phone (dinner), but I'll check on what you sent me when I return.

universe isnt infinate
User avatar #77 - celerant (06/06/2015) [-]
It might be, though for the purposes of this conversation , which relates to the mass contained within the universe, we don't have to worry about that too much.
User avatar #68 - celerant (06/06/2015) [-]
Statistically that may seem to be true, but if you flip a coin infinitely many times, there is still a chance that you will never get a certain side, no matter how small that chance may be.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's very likely that life exists beyond Earth. But at the same time, I wouldn't get my hopes up.

I was given 6 extra dips one time though...

A generous and appreciated gesture but what the hell am I supposed to do with that many dips, lather it atop the pizza like a thick paste? Gross...

Tv star kids are very well behaved, because they are used being told what to do.
Its when they hit their teens they get messed up as hell.
