again if your looking around and its a four-way stop sign as long as you slow down to at least close to a stop, theres no reason to sit at it.

#112 - zgbgydug (08/25/2016) [-]
I know that logically there is no reason to, but that isn't how the law works. And I would rather waste 5 seconds than get a several hundred dollar ticket just because I think it's a stupid rule

You're thinking of a yield sign
User avatar
#72 - masanori (08/25/2016) [-]
Which is what virtually all stop signs should be. There should be no four-way stops. Pick the busier road and prioritize it and put a yield sign on the other. Slow down, proceed if empty, stop if there's traffic, use common sense.

We should do a better job of screening idiots and withholding driving privileges from them rather than creating massively inefficient public roads by creating laws that shelter the most incompetent drivers from their mistakes.

So you think you got it all figured out do you?
its quite possible you have an interesting idea but alas, you're in a basement somewhere while professionals run the world.
If you really know whats better, you'd be out there already qualified to make change.

Excuses incoming. Im ready.
User avatar
#86 - masanori (08/25/2016) [-]
That's nonsense. "You'd already be there."

Go tell that to a six year old prodigy or something; "If you were really going to be anything, you'd already be it."

The simple fact is that I am intelligent enough to understand better solutions to most established practices (inb4 "omg ur so arrogant"), and there's no way I can effectively change everything at once. I also understand there's a reason things are the way they are, that you can't just revoke the driving rights from bad drivers because we rely on them as a means of production driving the economy and many of them work at places that aren't on any bus route. Some of them may even be very influential people who just happen to have terrible situational awareness. We need them to be able to drive, and the laws in place compensate for their lack of competence by assuming the worst of each individual using any given stretch of road.

It's just extremely inconvenient and a little annoying for people like me who are competent enough to get to where we need to go without following any established laws if we wanted to, and we could do so much more quickly. Since we're the minority however, and since such a chaotic system couldn't work with the level of population density our cities have, I'm left to simply tolerate excessive traffic regulations.

Also, I don't live in a basement. I have my own house.

The only reason i pester you is to see if you're a keyboard warrior that is all talk thinking they know better than professionals in their respective fields.
User avatar
#95 - masanori (08/25/2016) [-]
An understandable assumption. It isn't difficult to see that our roads and laws could be more efficient, but it's more of a driver problem than a law problem. Those laws are an annoying nuisance to me but are an absolute necessity for others. I understand that. They still annoy me anyway.
User avatar
#98 - affix (08/25/2016) [-]
Rules and laws are made to accommodate the weakest link.
They don't think about what's convenient for those that work at higher speed, and they don't care.
They want people alive more than happy :<
User avatar
#99 - masanori (08/25/2016) [-]
I think our current system is mostly based on emotional reasoning. It would be "too mean" to exclude certain people based on competence, so instead it's better to drag everyone down to the minimum level of functionality through laws and force them to stay there.
User avatar
#116 - rockamekishiko (08/26/2016) [-]
it's based on safety, not emotions. Stops are there to protect good drivers from dumb drivers. If it were all yield signs, you know how many morons wouldn't yield? Idiots run stop signs as it is and if you they saw a yield they'd hall ass and maybe you won't be far enough to see them.
User avatar
#118 - masanori (08/27/2016) [-]
Exactly, putting safety before efficiency? Refusing to allow those "morons" to pay for their stupidity by creating a nationwide cushion just for them? Maybe protecting us from them plays into it as well, but in that case we could just make it more difficult to get a driver's license and raise the average competence of our drivers.

>Not wanting people to face the consequences of their own incompetence
+
>Lowering the bar and enforcing often nonsensical laws on everyone to ensure incompetent people can still drive safely rather than just revoking their licenses.

Sure seems like an emotional decision to me.
User avatar
#119 - rockamekishiko (08/28/2016) [-]
i don't give a shit about them facing consequences or not, i care about not getting hit by them in the first place. I agree with the strict regulations to hand out driver licenses, though

Natural selection is pretty mean.
We don't use that today quite like how nature did back in the day.
We enable the fat. Lo and behold, there are more fat today than in antiquity.
The past wouldn't have let them survive.
Sorry if you're large, ignore that then.
User avatar
#102 - masanori (08/25/2016) [-]
I've been fit my entire life. I think you should maintain physical and mental fitness so if you encounter a challenge or obstacle, you can overcome it and possibly assist others rather than being an additional liability. Normalcy bias is a bitch and easy to fall into, but one day you may be there when an earth quake or flood hits, and if you can't even handle stairs on a good day, you probably won't make it.

I've had a knee surgery and my right shoulder won't stay in anymore, but I still don't let myself get fat. I don't know how people with properly functioning bodies can be so lazy that they let themselves reach hundreds of pounds in excess fat.
User avatar
#103 - affix (08/25/2016) [-]
Let me ask you one thing I've been thinking about a lot.
Have you ever seen a fat genius?
Not a large genius, but a very overweight one.
I think if you got some brains in your head, you realize the hazard, have the foresight to know life will be terrible, and then make the choice to lose weight.

I think two axis, weight and brains, can be plotted with a negative correlation.
User avatar
#105 - masanori (08/25/2016) [-]
Most of my family on my mother's side is quite large and also quite intelligent. Not sure why that is.

Interestingly, all of their children are also overweight, my mother is not, and i am not.

As a kid, you soak up everything around you.
Your parents being the closest thing usually.
Their habits, their words, their teachings. And i think that explains it maybe.
User avatar
#107 - masanori (08/25/2016) [-]
Yes, nature vs. nurture. My two half brothers are also overweight, but I grew up raised by my dad, who is 53, fit, works 60 hours or so a week, then comes home and farms.
User avatar
#104 - masanori (08/25/2016) [-]
I have not.

It's an anecdotal assumption, but yes, I think you're right. There is definitely a correlation between poor self-control and low intelligence, and there's definitely a correlation between poor self-control and obesity.

People are more likely to judge you on the delivery of your message than its contents. You can say something 100% factually correct but sound "kinda like a dick" and get red-thumbed to hell's basement.

Slow down is a generally loose term and sometimes you can't see around corners as well as notice pedestrians.
User avatar
#82 - masanori (08/25/2016) [-]
And in those instances when you are at a blind intersection you should be intelligent enough to understand that additional caution is warranted, otherwise you shouldn't be driving.
User avatar
#114 - drtrousersnake (08/25/2016) [-]
There is one other reason 4 way stops exist. Let's say you have 2 roads in remote locations like highways in the sticks that are fairly busy. You can't have a stoplight the because you'd need to run power the for the sole purpose of powering a single stoplight. If you have one side yield to the other, you could end up with a situation were a cars has to wait 5 minutes for a break in traffic so it can cross. Stop sign's are inconvenient but they discourage speeding and prevent tunnel vision
User avatar
#68 - StewieGGriffin (08/25/2016) [-]
No it shouldn't, because if you're at a corner where you two cars can't see each other and think its safe to pass the sign then you're going to have plenty of accidents. There are many corners near my house that you can barely see cars at until you hit the corner.
