If you're trying to drop weight, stimulating growth of some new muscle tissue can help speed up the process. The more muscle you have, the greater your body's energy needs. Think of it like an engine in a car; a muscle car with a 6L V8 is going to burn a hell of a lot more gas than a 1997 toyota with a little 2L 4 cylinder.

Also, forget doing cardio until you die and hoping that you burn enough calories to drop weight, that's how you lose muscle. What you wanna do, is do slow cardio on a treadmill/stairmaster for a LONG ASS TIME. The harder you make your body work, the more it is going to use glycogen for its primary energy source, and less and less fat as you work harder, because the metabolic process for releasing energy from triglycerides is more complicated and requires more oxygen consumption. So as your energy demand increases with the workload, it becomes more and more inefficient for your body to break down fat for energy. Thus it relies more and more, and eventually pretty much completely, on glycolysis for energy instead of oxidation of fat tissue.
