These rules actually seem quite reasonable, they should have been implemented beforehand. In Australia a referendum can only be passed by a "double majority", which means that there's both a national majority (over 50% of all voters agreed on the result) and a state majority (the majority of states internally agreed with the result).
In practice that means that for referendum A, if 100 million people vote, over 50 million people must agree to one result, and at the same time, 4 out of 6 states must have over 50% of their internal voters in agreement with the same result.

The system is designed to prevent a win by the population not being far enough either way or a win by lack of turnout, each state must have enough votes to present an internal result.

This system makes a lot of sense, I don't doubt they wouldn't suggest this if it had went the other way, or that they would reject it if leave had suggested it in this case, but it is a logical system which has merit.

I agree that the Australian system does make sense, and it would have been a good idea to implement it beforehand. However, this petition is asking for 60% of the overall votes with over 75% turnout. This clearly hasn't been thought through, because if the votes are so close that it's barely a majority, it's not going to change drastically enough to get 60% on one side if you do it again. Let alone the whole 75% turnout bullshit, the last time we even got 75% turnout was in 1992. Basically I'm saying implementing these rules would mean that the referendum would simply be repeated over and over, because 60% on one side isn't going to happen, and 75% turnout isn't likely either.

What disgusts me is that over 1,300,000 people would value their decision over their democratic rights, by asking for a second referendum just because they didn't get what they want. It's an attitude shared by third-wave feminists, and it's honestly so sad to see that there are so many self-entitled immature cry babies infesting the country, and the world even.

rant over, long story short, the major problem imo isn't the rules themselves, it's the fact that little kids who are signing this shit (many of whom are unable to vote) and basically saying fuck you to democracy just because they can't accept that they didn't get what they want.

normal voter turnout is about 62-63%, the voting turnout for this was 73% and the scotland turnout was about 75%. Britain has a voter apathy rate of 25-30% so to have 72% is really good for a single vote.
