I mean Lusitania wasn't really the reason to go to war. It was destroyed in 1915 and only after the Zimmerman telegram and the actual decision to go to war, it was used as a casus belli

Zimmerman telegram asked Mexico to attack US if US declared war on Germany. Basically forming a conditional alliance. No reason to go to war over it.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it still a cruise ship carrying civilians? Not saying that the Germans were necessarily in the wrong for taking out what was essentially a supply ship, but surely they could have gone after a different ship. Unless we were hiding munitions in all of Britains passenger liners.

Wouldn't that technically be a war crime, if you view it from the correct angle? Disguising units as civilians is a war crime, so clearly so is disguising munition ships as "passenger" ships. Don't want to die? Don't board a military ship, m8s. It's obvious a craft that is used for military supplies would be targeted for military reasons.

I don't know, I feel like the line is a bit blurred here. If the crew and passengers were all military personnel disguised as civilians, I would agree with you, but I think that the Lusitania was a regular passenger ship that the US hid munitions in. We probably thought that Germany wouldn't fire on in a civilian vessel. Also, I highly doubt that most people onboard knew about the supplies. It wouldn't exactly be a secret of everyone knew about it, though I agree that getting on a boat which you know is headed through contested waters isn't very smart.

There's actually a surprising amount of quasi-case law on this. Any ship flying the flag of a belligerent nation was a legitimate target for a privateer or taking as a prize. Of course the practice of taking prizes fell out of use after the Napoleonic Wars (there are various causes but none really pertain to this). The German declaration of unrestricted submarine warfare was essentially an extension and modernization of this concept. Though there was debate as whether or not a submarine crew had to secure the crew and passengers before sinking (as was common when taking prizes in the age of sail) such a thing was impossible to assure with submarines. This also fell out of practice with the evolution of the line of battle.

Since the RMS Lusitania was flying the English Naval Jack it was a legitimate target for naval engagement. The American protest of this action was the fact that American citizens died. However, weeks before the Lusitania was sunk the German embassy in the U.S. posted warning in all major American seaports of the German Navy's intent to sink any and all ships flying the colors of belligerent nation. the American passengers were more than away of the possibility of being sunk.

TL;DR
As a British Ship the RMS Lusitania was a legitimate target, Unrestricted Submarine Warfare was a legitimate practice, Any civilian casualties were taken at their own risk.

Nothing odd about it. That information was swept under the rug here in America because it draws attention to the fact that we, as a nation, were engaged in war profiteering.

Here we are, 100+ years later, and we're still engaged in war profiteering.

I don't have a problem with war profiteering. I have a problem with interventionism and decade long pseudo-wars, and government requisitioning corporations for arms and war equipment at the expense of the taxpayer that are then sold to "allies" at a loss.

And idk, I just never liked it. Everything that seemed like it was supposed to be really unpredictable was really predictable for me. Not all of it, but most of it.
