Basically no one wants to pay for everyone so everyone suffers, yes. If you really want to talk American backasswards politics look at our tax sheets. Frankly I'd like to see major reforms come through with the congressional system and bipartisan system more than the healthcare system. At least then shit could actually get done.

No no it's shit.
Because we have a huge population with a huge margin between classes and it's literally impossible to make a system that everyone is happy with. Because everyone in middle class and higher doesn't want to pay for the meth heads of America, the people who legit need welfare are upset because insurance is expensive and upper class people don't want to pay the millions of dollars to provide health care through employment (essentially what Obama has been trying to push).

TL;DR no one is happy but it's the best system we can come up with where no one is rioting.

only in europe would you never actually have a chance of getting a new kidney because you have to wait nearly a full year for diagnosis and then more for an available organ.

You euros don't seem to understand that insurance will cover most costs. It's almost like we have a different healthcare system that doesn't involve a flat tax to pay for a social health care system and gives us different levels of coverage that you can choose based on what you need. So as a student in the US I don't have to pay for some 45 year old smokers throat cancer and instead can just pay the minimum insurance rate because I'm fucking healthy.
#64 - imbehindu (01/15/2015) [-]
Eh well, no, but kinda. The wait a year to be put on a list law applies to liver transplants, and only under the circumstance of alcohol caused liver problems, and that's cause Terry the alcoholic fucked himself up, whereas little Johnny the Orphan boy with massive organ failure did nothing wrong. You wait a year for diagnosis because you have to prove to them that a liver used on you is not a liver wasted. As for the never getting a new kidney thing, these are the median transplant times:
US: Kidney – 5 years
Liver – 11 months
Heart – 4 months
Lung – 4 months

UK: Kidney: 3 years 1 Month
Liver: 4.5 months
Heart: 15 months
Lung: 9 months

And by European standards the UK health system is pretty slow, it's just absolutely exceptional in the sense that it's entirely free, and off the topic of organ transplants if you have had a heart attack THEY WILL FUCKING HELP YOU NOT RAID YOUR POCKETS FOR AN INSURANCE NUMBER
User avatar #31 - Faz (01/14/2015) [-]
Maybe you educate yourself, i work for a private medical insurance company which for £900 a month you can get full medical coverage in the UK which well give you access to private facilities which are amazing and can get seen the same day you call up and can even get same week surgery. Health Care in the UK doesn't charge extortionate prices when going private.
#51 - anonymous (01/14/2015) [-]

User avatar #52 - Faz (01/14/2015) [-]
Like i said it was a typo i meant £90 not £900.
User avatar #34 - demented (01/14/2015) [-]
Or get this. I can pay my 600 DOLLAR insurance and get full coverage with walk in options and leave paying my $30 portion the same day. My uncle quite literally has the minimum insurance he can have walked into the doctor's office one week and went in for a double bypass the next while only getting set back 2 grand. If you think 900 pounds a month isn't extortionate you might want to take a step back
#74 - youraverageteenage (01/15/2015) [-]

Shit sorry that £900 was a typo i mean't £90 and thats with all of the optional extras (such as extended hospital lists which only applies to London and "luxury ambulances").

Currently im on a £8 per month plan (so cheap because its a company plan and as i said i work for the company) which gives coverage to use private hospitals and see private specialists.
User avatar #38 - demented (01/14/2015) [-]
I dunno I pay $600 because it covers me and my folks and it's just sort of our arrangement. I agree that the American health system is faulty but I prefer it to the social health care system of our Hat.
#26 - animesource (01/14/2015) [-]
I agree that insurance is better than flat tax.
But then you see that $39,000 bill for cut finger and you lose all hope.
Your prices are stupidly inflated. Shit doesn't cost that much.
User avatar #28 - brokentrucker (01/14/2015) [-]
You can dispute unnecessary charges. Plus, a cut finger is only 200$. I should know.
#30 - animesource (01/14/2015) [-]
Would you need money for lawyer to dispute them? That's still lots of extra costs.
I can agree with $200 if it's badly hurt. Bandage, etc. doesn't cost much but human resources do (at least in US).
User avatar #33 - brokentrucker (01/14/2015) [-]
My cut finge was pretty bad, but I got off lucky, and had the wound sealed before i got there. The 200 was for examination and bandaids. But, say I had a broken finger, and they charged me for lolipops or some shit, you can generally just go up to the desk and be all like "yo, this shit is whack"
User avatar #27 - demented (01/14/2015) [-]
I don't think anyone has ever charged that much for a cut finger unless the finger was literally cut OFF. But yeah our healthcare system is expensive. But I'd say it's more efficient than the "Wait 5 months to have your chest pain examined" system.
#29 - animesource (01/14/2015) [-]
I fucked up. It was $9,000. But that's not the point.
For that much I could hire a doctor for a whole fucking month.
10 minute work to bandage cut finger isn't worth $9,000.
I want that job if it pays $2,160,000 per 40-hour week.
I'll just quit on first patient and still make enough to last me for months.

Source: www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2718085/Hospital-charges-man-nearly-9-000-treat-CUT-middle-finger.html
User avatar #32 - demented (01/14/2015) [-]
The article makes the statement that it was the fault of the insurance not the hospital/doctors. Even then I'd argue that in any system you'll get doctors trying to gouge people. That's what malpractice charges are for.
#35 - animesource (01/14/2015) [-]
That's the point.
Without insurance it costs $9,000 and that is big pile of bullshit.

I had chickenpox, pneumonia, had an x-ray, went to dentist multiple times, had surgery on my big toes at least 5 times because of ingrown nail and the only time I had to pay was $4 for painkiller injection at the dentist (of course antibiotics/etc had to be paid for too but most of them had discounts for up to 90%).
User avatar #36 - demented (01/14/2015) [-]
It was an error though. It was because the hospital wasn't being funded publicly at all. I've been to several different doctors including a minor operation which required general anesthesia and I got charged about $300 in total. It's a different system and not without it's flaws but I like being able to chose my coverage.

At some point it'll get a major revision but it won't be any time soon and for good reason in that while a pain it isn't terribly broken.

Now our TAXES on the other hand that is some of the most roundabout shit I've ever seen.
