Do you really think its impossible to have a voluntary based society where everyone respects the rights of individuals? Do you, personally, not conduct yourself in this form? Do you go around and point guns at people's heads or threaten to lock them up in a cage for every interaction you have? If not, you are living proof we can have a non-violent society where individuals respect the rights of others.

User avatar #465 - Yardie (04/17/2014) [-]
The point is you don't need to force money out of people's hands. Anything beneficial that the Government does can be done in a free society as well.

Why is that such a hard concept to grasp? When you say "never use the services taxes pay for," you're just begging the question.
User avatar #466 - voltkills (04/17/2014) [-]
if taxes where optional, how many would pay them, well, only the socialists probably, i wouldnt pay them, not if roads where still there and schools and stuff, so lets assume less then 50% of a country pays the taxes, thats crippling, the economey would be instantly ruined. why is it so hard for you to grasp that taxes are nesenscarry to provide the serveices. also as ive said, government funded will ALWAYS be cheaper then private as private companies are out to make mega money while governments dont. (see: the wage of a CEO vs the uk prime minster.)
User avatar #467 - Yardie (04/17/2014) [-]
You're missing the point.

If I want my kid to learn math, I will pay a teacher to teach them math.

If I want to use a road, I will pay a private business for my ability to use that road.

If I want a safety net, I will buy insurance.

You're begging the question again. You believe taxes are necessary, I'm saying they're not, and are, in fact, destructive.

The period of the greatest Economic growth in the US happened in the same period where taxes were the lowest. This disproves that Government Spending is the only way to grow an economy. The Great Depression happened after the Federal Reserve was founded and Monetary Policy became a thing. The plethora of Government Programs and the War only made the Depression worse, turning it into the Great Depression as we call it today. This shows that Government Policies can actually damage the economy more than it can help.

Combine these two pieces of evidence with the fact that fundamentally, forced taxation is theft, and you get the idea that a Free society is objectively better for the people than a Totalitarian society.
User avatar #468 - voltkills (04/17/2014) [-]

What makes you think you will pay more? I have evidence that Government Involvement causes things to cost more.

And you deny that the economy grew in the late 1800s / early 1900s despite the lack of Government Spending?

I said it proves that Government Spending isn't the only way to grow an economy. You seem to think that taxation is how the economy grows. I showed evidence that that's not the case.

And you continue with Ad Hominem attacks.
User avatar #470 - voltkills (04/17/2014) [-]
i never claimed anything about growing the economy, ive never mentioned that, thats not even at all what this is about, like, cmon, really? why do i say you will pay more, well i already explained that, its like you are ignoring everything im saying and then just going on about irrelevant stuff im not intrested in. im not saying anything about economy growth, im just saying making taxes optional would ruin the economy. im not denying the economy grew then, how do you read that out of my words? im saying the lowering of taxes was not the only cuase, chances are if taxes were low then so were government expenses, currently they are high as hell, what with the war on terror and the global crisis. also you totally ignored my point about the army, conveinant, isnt it?
User avatar #471 - Yardie (04/17/2014) [-]
"lets assume less than 50% of a country pays the taxes, that's crippling, the economy would be instantly ruined"

I assumed this means: 'The economy grows due to Government Spending. If citizens don't pay taxes, the Government can't spend and the economy is ruined.' So I guess I need clarification. Do you believe that Government powers the economy or not?

And let me clarify something. Direct taxes are immoral and are theft. I don't intend to say any form of taxation is theft. Sales taxes or other Indirect taxes are fine, I can live with that. Military protection paid for through taxation at a local level is fine. There's a difference, however, between military protection and a military industrial complex that invades "unfree" countries in the name of "Democracy" when it's absolutely unnecessary for the protection of the citizens of the US. What ever happened to speak softly and carry a big stick?

And the amount of Government Spending we have right now is ludicrous. There is absolutely no need for most of what the Government is currently responsible for. If nobody paid income taxes the problem wouldn't be the taxation, the problem would be the inefficiencies of Government Spending that cripple the economy.

Economies grow because of production. You can't consume unless something is produced. In a Capitalist society, the means of production are private, therefore the private sector is what grows the economy. Taking away from the private sector through taxation or regulation damages the economy because there are less resources to invest in production. Socializing certain industries like Healthcare, Insurance, Schooling, etc. takes from the private sector and tosses it into the public sector, creating a Crony society. Public losses Private gains. I would argue Cronyism (out current system) is damaging to the economy, and many would agree.

User avatar #461 - yeorey (04/17/2014) [-]
Well since government has a complete monopoly on roads, I have no choice but to use public roads and highways. If society cannot come up with a peaceful and voluntary way to acquire goods/services without making everyone pay for them at gun point, then society has failed. When we, the people, are able to choose among competitive businesses we can get affordable, quality goods/services. Like if the government didn't have a monopoly over small packages and letters, I could go to UPS or Fedex to mail a letter for half the price. The only reason why anything is expensive now is because we use a devaluing dollar that constantly loses its buying power, and government subsidizing industries. In a truly free market, roads and other public services would be cheap, cost effective, and not funded by the threat of violence from the state.

You do get thrown in jail for taxing people. It's called Extortion. The Mafia used to do it all the time. The Government doesn't get arrested, however, for obvious reasons.

Something can be immoral and legally enforced at the same time. How do you think Slavery was imposed?

Also direct taxation was unconstitutional until the 16th amendment because the founders understood how corrupt direct taxation is.

Taking money from people should always be morally wrong. every good and service has a price, school costs money, people who live in socialist states think school is "free" no it's not free, it's paid for by other working people. those who require services should pay for them, if you get sick you pay a doctor to make you better. you want and education to build on your future? you pay a school to provide you that service. it's very simple, my grandfather has been working for the same company for 27 years, he is almost never sick, he has never had to use the hospital, he didn't go to school(times were different back in the day) he has never needed welfare or anything, he is basically being robbed 37% of his work so other people can have a good life, that my friends is immoral.
User avatar #276 - voltkills (04/16/2014) [-]
but lets say now, your grandfather had never paid taxes, they didnt exsist, lets say he got ill, like, bad, the hospital fees would cripple him economically, being ill means he couldn't work to pay for it. hes fucked. (in the US this still happen alot anyway). taxes mean services are a fuckton cheaper, private education costs an absolute fuckton compared to the amount of taxes youd pay a year that go to schools, one hip operation in the US costs much more then an entire years worth of taxes towards the NHS in the uk, in which time you could have had so many damn operations. saying its robbing you is bullshite, taxes provide a services that would cost so much more if they were all privatised, and the fact your granddad never used them makes him an idiot for not using services available, it doesnt make the government morally wrong for trying to help its people. also i love how by your logic, helping people to have a good life is an immoral thing to do, like wow, thats cold. before you accuse me of being a socialist, i fucking hate socialism, i think taxes should be capped at 30%, but i see the need for state funded education and healthcare.
User avatar #442 - yeorey (04/16/2014) [-]
When government fixes prices and monopolizes services, everyone is crippled economically. There are little to no competition for affordable and quality services. And there is nothing moral about about stealing. If you take someone's property and give it to someone less fortunate, you are still stealing. You lose the moral high ground when you advocate that everyone must fund these services at gun point. You lose the moral high ground when you subject everyone being threatened of their livelihood and have them thrown in cages inb4 redundant . If you want publicly funded services, don't subjugate me or anyone who wants to peacefully opt out.
User avatar #460 - voltkills (04/17/2014) [-]
