I've had a few and would like to get a nitro, but I'll always miss my first RC car.
Only get into nitro if you like annoying loud noise, expensive fuel, mess, the boring kind of maintenance where you get slimy shit everywhere, and no reverse gear on most cars. Or just get brushless and lipo and go wild. I've been using a caster f8t for the last 5 years with a 1800W motor and 5S lipo. It's very violent and can do a standing backflip on a grippy surface. I'm not even running it at its full power cause to be honest.. it's dangerous.
back when I used to mess around with them the 7.2v nicd's I used to be a pain because of the amount of time they took to charge. I didn't really think about the fact lithium batteries have gotten a lot more powerful for their weight.
Those nicads were, quite frankly, cancer. They were absolute shite. In comparison I've been using the same pair of packs since 2011. A turnigy 3s and 2s 5000mAh pack. And they're a cheap brand, essentially hobbykings own house brand. You can get them for a good price and they have regional warehouses. Lipo charges can be had for a good price too. You'll just need a decent 12V supply. you can use an old pc atx supply but make sure you connect some LEDs or something to the 5v and 3v rails. If it's on for a long time with nothing pulling the rails it will die. Can be set up pretty cheaply. There's a million different motors, different speeds and power. Shops often advertise them by the KV rating only which is mostly useless as it just means rpm per volt. Which can be adjusted via gearing, different pinions and such. I'm rambling a bit, look at the Amp/Watt ratings and a controller about 50% more powerful so it can handle it under heavy load. best of with a ready built kit to ease you back into it.
