Do you consider people from the Northwest United States as having accents? Because apparently we are the one region in the world that pronounces English words exactly as they are written with no sort of regional accent.

Actually, queen Elizabeth the first demanded that the English language to be pronounced differently and 'invented' the posh British accent you hear these days. And maybe demanded is not the right word, but she and the nobility adjusted their accent and the rest followed because it was 'cool'. So in fact, American/Australian accents are much more like the way 'original' English used to be pronounced, rather than modern day British. Still, the whole discussion is bullshit. As long as you can communicate with each other, I believe.

The more you know....
#2712 - magmon (04/11/2014) [-]
Not all English accents are "posh", and the UK includes Ireland and Scotland (at the moment), neither of which are "posh".

The more you know?
User avatar #1579 - paintplayer (04/11/2014) [-]
That's cool bro, you still put emphases on things in very stylized ways compared to us. Also I'm fairly sure that despite your being from the UK, you didn't invent the English language, so no need to get so prideful about its origins.
#1581 - magmon (04/11/2014) [-]
Not from the UK. Just pisses me off when Americans are like "WE DON'T HAVE ACCENTS, YOU GUYS DO". Our language comes from their country. They are right.
User avatar #1596 - paintplayer (04/11/2014) [-]
Oh you're one of those UK versions of a weeaboo, using "twat" and all that. Here's the thing, man. There are a variety of American accents just like there are a variety of accents across the UK. Southern, East Coast, Midwest, etc. Check this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8mzWkuOxz8. What I'm saying is, if you go to the Northwest US, people generally pronounce things very phonetically rather than putting any type of influence on anything. I read the word "idea" as "idea;" my grandmother from the East Coast pronounced it "idear." She had the accent, because she pronounced it differently than it was written. It's not a problem, I'm just saying, if you are quantifying accent as a deviation from the written phonetic pronunciation, then the NW has little to no accent.

I spell how I spell because it's closer to origin, but I speak any words within the language as they are fair game. I have no need to be from anywhere other than where I am now. I love Colorado, and I have the "North Western" accent you are talking about. Still, as far as accuracy goes, London is as close to origin as we can get.
#1555 - xzayviaaeyeres (04/11/2014) [-]
I don't know as I don't know what a Northwest accent is. I'm usually okay with North american accents, Partly thanks to copious amounts of US TV programming that we get, I think
