User avatar #6 - murrlogic (09/13/2015) [-]
Dick Cheney is for gay marriage because gay marriage is the best distraction to initiate TPP.
User avatar #9 - Ruspanic (09/13/2015) [-]
what's wrong with tpp?
serious question
User avatar #26 - murrlogic (09/13/2015) [-]
Alright then now you got me curious

How does it benefit me.
User avatar #27 - Ruspanic (09/13/2015) [-]
Okay, let's say some American company, for example General Motors, sells cars to Japanese customers. These Japanese are happy because they bought new cars that they wanted, and GM is happy because it made a lot of money. Some of that money becomes profit, and some of the money is used to builds a factory in your town and employs a bunch of people to work in the factory, thereby creating jobs and sources of income for a bunch of people. Maybe you're one of those people, maybe not. But even if you're not, these new GM employees can spend the money they made in the economy and help other businesses do well. And perhap some of that money goes toward Research and Development to produce new cars, which might be better than the previous models. Or perhaps GM's research teaches it how to make cars more cheaply, so it can sell them at lower prices. Then you can buy a car, if you want.

On the other side, suppose Japan sells electronics to American customers. Okay, I don't know if you're American but humor me if you're not. Let's say you are. Great, now you can buy all your Samsung or Sony products that you want, and Japanese companies make money. What's wrong with that?
User avatar #28 - murrlogic (09/13/2015) [-]
Your GM comparison would have been better if you used China instead since Chinese people are interested in Hummers which is apart of GM
User avatar #29 - Ruspanic (09/13/2015) [-]
Fine, it was just an example. I could have used food as an example, or any other industry.
User avatar #30 - murrlogic (09/13/2015) [-]
But if you mentioned food you'd use Monsanto as a comparison.
User avatar #31 - Ruspanic (09/13/2015) [-]
Maybe, or I could use Kraft Foods or something. Or some Japanese fishery. It doesn't matter, what do you think of my broader point?
User avatar #32 - murrlogic (09/13/2015) [-]
Monsanto owns Kraft

All these medium sized corporations are owned by larger corporations

Can you see why I don't like them we're going back to monopolies.
User avatar #33 - Ruspanic (09/13/2015) [-]
Yeah monopolies are pretty shit, no arguments there. A market dominated by monopolies isn't really a free market.

But you get my argument, right? Just because trade benefits rich people and large corporations doesn't mean it doesn't also benefit the average person.
User avatar #10 - murrlogic (09/13/2015) [-]
I dunno its very vauge on the details but anything that makes huge faceless corporations more money is not OK with me.

They're planning something.
User avatar #11 - Ruspanic (09/13/2015) [-]
That's... vague.
User avatar #12 - murrlogic (09/13/2015) [-]
That's the idea.

Everything is vauge so if we don't understand that means its working

Double Speak.
User avatar #13 - Ruspanic (09/13/2015) [-]
But your lack of understanding of it isn't necessarily evidence that "they're planning something" either...
User avatar #14 - murrlogic (09/13/2015) [-]
I just know it has to be bad

Why would anything nice happen?
User avatar #15 - Ruspanic (09/13/2015) [-]
Because international trade agreements aren't necessarily evil?
User avatar #16 - murrlogic (09/13/2015) [-]
There isn't a lot of resources to go around friend

We're drawing a thin line.
User avatar #17 - Ruspanic (09/13/2015) [-]
What do you mean? The whole point of trade is you give away stuff you value less and get stuff you value more in return - like a large sum of money. So everyone gets richer, subjectively. It's not like it's involuntary. And if the stuff we're trading is electronics or food or cars, those aren't scarce resources anyway.
User avatar #18 - murrlogic (09/13/2015) [-]
>So everyone gets richer

Reghannomics said the exact same thing.
User avatar #19 - Ruspanic (09/13/2015) [-]
But... that's literally the basic principle of trade. How can you deny that? Why would anyone even make a trade if they didn't think they were benefiting from it?
International trade is one of the reasons for the massive decline in global poverty in the past half-century or so.
User avatar #20 - murrlogic (09/13/2015) [-]
>International trade is one of the reasons for the massive decline in global poverty in the past half-century or so.

Because Rich people are dicks.
User avatar #21 - Ruspanic (09/13/2015) [-]
I'm genuinely not understanding what you're on about here.
I mean, yeah, rich people and large corporations are sometimes exploitative but that's not an argument against capitalism or international trade in general, nor against the TPP.
And the decline in global poverty is simply a fact.
User avatar #22 - murrlogic (09/13/2015) [-]
>I mean, yeah, rich people and large corporations are sometimes exploitative
>sometimes exploitative

You're insane.
User avatar #23 - Ruspanic (09/13/2015) [-]
What, you think literally all rich people are exploitative? Are you one of those who thinks wage labor itself is exploitation, or something?
Dude, how can you have an opinion on the TPP when you don't understand how trade works?
User avatar #24 - murrlogic (09/13/2015) [-]
>What, you think literally all rich people are exploitative?

YES! And its been this way since Industry was a thing.

>Are you one of those who thinks wage labor itself is exploitation, or something?

No because I enjoy my job
User avatar #25 - Ruspanic (09/13/2015) [-]
Not all rich people got rich by screwing over poor people.
But even the ones that did, if they were capitalists or investors, most likely brought some good to the world along with the bad - jobs, goods and services, economic growth, etc.
That does not at all justify exploitation, but it does mean you should reconsider opposing trade itself simply because it benefits rich people. It often benefits you as well. Trade isn't a zero-sum game.
