You do realize those immigrants that move here end up pooling the money of their entire families just to pull these audacious treks, right?

They also end up living at a friend's house for at least half of a year before finding a low-end job that accepts fresh non-US-citizens (it takes 5 years of permanent residency for US citizenship), and alot of the time,
the "opportunity" they come here for ends up being bogus with
employers taking advantage of them and not paying them fairly.

You can't look any harder for a job if your walking distance is 5-10 miles daily, 10-20 miles from carpooling daily, no money for car insurance, and little money for a bus.

And good luck finding an online job that pays you hourly for your work, instead of a job that makes you do 14 hours of work for an 8-hour's regular wage.

"Don't like it, work somewhere else"
That's what all the conservatives say.
Yeah what if every other place in town that isn't hiring since either all the jobs are taken or have requirements of "experience"?

So you need a job to get experience, and experience to get a job.
The cycle breaks when a job is demanding experienced from somebody that never got hired.

Often times, people without jobs can't afford cars, or car insurance, so they can only go as far as a 1-2 hour bus ride, which is about 30-minutes to 45-minutes of an avergage car ride. And that's IF they can afford bus rides in the first place.

Parents and friends usually have a driving tolerance threshold of 10-20 miles, and that's surprisingly not a very common benefit. So then young adults are stuck on electric scooters and bicycles for the job-hunt, or worse- on foot.

The chances of walking to a plaza and walking out with a job are currently at 3.5/10.
And no, visiting multiple times a week doesn't help, and when you have bills and or are being urged to find a job, you don't have months to wait. This is why a lot of people are seen as "lazy", but the reality is that acquiring real world jobs is a pain in the ass if you're not in china- and good luck getting a job THERE that treats you humanely.

A lot of these people working at these fastfood and coffee shops DON'T WANT TO BE THERE. They're stuck there because it's one of the chains that hire people regularly(since people tend to save up money and move onto other jobs after a couple of years), and they cycle their employees around based on hourly shifts.

Other places like electronics shops, and decent well-paying jobs don't treat people like that. Job security is better there, and people leave the job less frequently, as well as fired less frequently, since it's not a fast-paced, stress-inducing environment like a low-paying fast-food chain.

So no, dude.
It's not a choice, it's a forced ordeal brought on by unfavorable coincidental circumstances.

If there's no work where you live, go live somewhere where there's some work.

People often move to another country when necessary. They always have.
#46 - nimithecat (10/12/2014) [-]
"Can't find a job here? Move somewhere that has work"

sylberleaf , I dunno if you know this, but moving takes money.
You need a job to get money.
You need money for transportation, food, and the new place you're moving to....

This is another factor that makes things to difficult.
#118 - sylberleaf (10/13/2014) [-]
I've had about $300 on me when I moved several thousand miles after a job.

It's difficult only if you're looking for an excuse why not to do it.
User avatar #119 - nimithecat (10/13/2014) [-]
Yeah, you wanna know how many people wind up homeless pulling that stunt like you did? Believe me dude, shit's not as easy as you think.
User avatar #121 - sylberleaf (10/13/2014) [-]
Of course it's not easy for someone who's not ready to commit to hard work and break a sweat to improve his life and living.

Lazy asses will always complain and look for excuses why they should do as little work as possible.
User avatar #122 - nimithecat (10/13/2014) [-]
It's not always necessarily laziness.
A lot of the time, it's simply a matter of inconvenient circumstances that prevent someone from reaching a necessary goal.

If you're stuck in a metal box, how do you look for food and water?
User avatar #125 - sylberleaf (10/13/2014) [-]
Think outside the box. That's how.
User avatar #126 - nimithecat (10/13/2014) [-]
Think outside the box all you want, but your body is still going to be stuck in a metal box.
There are a shitload of potential geniuses that end up never being discovered due to being in a pinched state of poverty.
User avatar #127 - sylberleaf (10/13/2014) [-]
If you suddenly want to take my words literally, guess what... people are not stuck in metal boxes.

So what's your next excuse?
User avatar #128 - nimithecat (10/13/2014) [-]
If you're stuck in a town with no jobs, and no money for another house elsewhere, and little money for transportation, you are stuck in that situation until further notice or someone helps you.

Do you think people actually want to live in poverty?

User avatar #129 - sylberleaf (10/13/2014) [-]
No, you're not stuck anywhere.

I am the proof. And many like me.

"Hur everybudy is meee and I live in a place that haz jubs".

Good for you buddy. But what about people that didn't live in a nice rich white town?
As an animator, private freelance game developer, and ex-hydraulic technician, I know the highs and lows of what it's like to get a job, and what opportunities show up.

When i was younger I lived in poverty, I had nowhere to go, I was stuck in a terrible job,
and I worked 56 hours a week, and still barely had enough to pay the bills. Eventually the bills beat my ability to get a raise, so I then had to move back with my parents for a month, and it was in that area where I found work with the gaming and animation industry.

However, because I didn't have college education before, my employer is now covering my college tuition while I work there, since my self-taught skills were sufficient for the job.

Wanna know how this all happened? By chance.
I couldn't have afforded to move to an area near my parents, and there was no animation or game dev job in my previous area.
Locale and economic limitations can be completely crippling. All i had on my side was luck. If that opportunity didn't show up, I could have been stuck with my parents.
User avatar #131 - sylberleaf (10/13/2014) [-]
See? You've got it wrong right from the beginning.

I've MOVED to a place that has jobs. Several thousand miles.

See? Like from a "metal box" to look for a place where there's food and water. See?

User avatar #133 - nimithecat (10/13/2014) [-]
IN a nutshell; the more money that is made in an area, the more expensive the items there tend to get, as the prices are adjusted for economic value and knowing what percentage people are willing to pay.

"My boss won't promote me."
"My boss won't pay me well enough."
"The economy is not good enough."

YOU need to change. Not your boss. Not the economy.

Only you can change yourself. Nobody else is going to do it for you.

User avatar #146 - nimithecat (10/13/2014) [-]
Yeah, hard to say that when you're working 50+ hours, boss won't let you work more, and can't give you any more raises because he 'cant afford it'....
Even with a hard work ethic, your boss can only reward you so much. And I'm sure changing myself again wouldn't suddenly make money pop into the boss's pockets.

You keep coming up with excuses to justify poverty, while never having been in that position yourself.
User avatar #140 - sylberleaf (10/13/2014) [-]

User avatar #144 - nimithecat (10/13/2014) [-]
"know your strengths and don't be stupid"
That's your justification for people who are stuck in dead-end jobs without hope of moving on in an area with no other jobs available, and not enough money earned to sufficiently save up to move elsewhere with a higher-level economy and more easily available jobs.

Lol, I've worked 68 hours per week for first three years so I could progress a little.

Now I work 37,5 hours per week and earn ten times the amount I earned when I started.

Life is not about GETTING a chance. It's about TAKING chances.

So yeah, I guess you must have wasted so many chances in your life...
User avatar #139 - nimithecat (10/13/2014) [-]
Yeah luckily for you, you ended up working in a convenient spot.
Not everybody has that luxury, and end up grinding away well into their 40's until they make a decent wage for about 10 years. And then what? Retirement?

I'm happy for you that you took your chance when it came to you, but I'm afraid the world just doesn't work like that for everybody else, and you need to accept that. People have had it way harder than I did, and instead of dismissing their efforts as "laziness", I think giving them their chance will make a significant change in their lives.
User avatar #136 - sylberleaf (10/13/2014) [-]
Nah, you're just looking for excuses for why not to bother to do anything out of the fear that what you will do might have got a bad outcome.

No wonder you're stressed out.
User avatar #137 - nimithecat (10/13/2014) [-]
Excuses? These are things that nearly put me homeless.
I worked more than 50 hours a week, do you really think this is all out of making "excuses"?
I worked for my future and I still got screwed.
I was only saved by chance.

Chances aren't handed out to everybody out on cookie platters.
User avatar #132 - nimithecat (10/13/2014) [-]
Well congratulations.
Not all places "that have jobs" have affordable properties and homes. When you're moving from an area with low economic prosperity to one with a higher economic prosperity, the other house's payments will be much greater than your current economic standing will provide.

There's no amount of "hard work" that can change how much more of a raise your employer is willing to give you before you become a burden to the company. And raises don't come as frequently as your bills continue to climb. Even if you're the star employee, your raises won't come all that frequently.

It is difficult to determine the economic and job growth value in a given area before moving, and again.. even if its job ratio is higher, it's still far more expensive to start out there, and saving up for that becomes far more difficult with the ongoing demands from your current responsibilities.
User avatar #134 - sylberleaf (10/13/2014) [-]
If you have a job in one area, you can easily afford a rent in that area also. Economics 101.

Once you have A job, no one but you can stop you to start educating yourself and look for a better job.

Don't overthink it and stop whining ffs
User avatar #135 - nimithecat (10/13/2014) [-]
Good friggin God.. you really think life works this easy, don't you?
You must've lived in a really REALLY nice town. I'm glad you didn't have to go through what I went through.

I rather have you being naive than being a stressed-out caffeine-chugger like me constantly aware of his surroundings.

If your thoughtless easy way of life is working out for you, then I have no reason to worry if your ideas will get you in trouble. You're living a happy life, and coincidentally the cards fell in the right place for you.

Unfortunately for the rest of the world, it doesn't work like that.
All that I ask, is for you not to dismiss everyone's less fortunate lives as "laziness", as more often than not, it's the poor that wind up working harder than us, to earn less than us.
User avatar #47 - wwkybobo (10/12/2014) [-]
Immigrants with no money move from shit hole countries to the united states and bust their ass to make a living. If some teenager who's had it all from the start thinks their life sucks because they get minimum wage, they should see how immigrants live. If you cant find good enough work, you aren't looking hard enough.
#48 - nimithecat (10/12/2014) [-]
