That might be possible if it were expecting oil, but I don't know the feasibility of somehow extracting energy from plastic. I find it unlikely. Sciencexplain ?

Plastic is formed of hydrocarbons, which are chemical chains formed by the fractional distillation of crude oil. If there was a way to modify the hydrocarbon chains in plastic so that heat could be applied to create new bonds and re-create the oil (which I doubt is possible but I dont know) then it would be able to be fueled by plastic.

So basically if the plastic were made in a special way such that the process was reversible (and also would probably have to store additional energy in the mean time), then it might be possible.

Yes. I would assume that the robot has either a heating core that uses energy to break the bonds or a chemical that breaks the bonds and can break them into even chains and re-bond them into long lengths. The exact control of atomic chains is highly difficult though, so it would be expensive and temperamental.
