I honestly dont know, i have yet to choose my major as im just joining college and im super interested in physics also, but i would say a branch of physics or chemistry. Depending on if they used chemical means to store the energy like a car battery does, or a physical phenomena i think it could go either way.

We just dont have technology capable of capturing that much energy at once. Lightning strikes can release hundreds of millions of watts of energy in the smallest fraction of a second. If we could design something that could capture that much energy that quickly, we could most definitely use it as a power source.

the problem is speed, we have nothing that can store that much energy that quickly..
Maybe when capacitor technology improves and carbon nano-film capacitors reach maturity, we might be able to harness lightning at a feasible level...
