i think that is the point though, the intention is to raise it so people on the lower end of the economic scale receive more money and in general poorer people spend their pay checks over save them. this money then goes back into the economy and improves the economy due to the multiplier effect.

Whoever disagrees with you is retarded. Places like Walmart and such literally do exactly what you said. Last time I mentioned this, someone whinged at me about not knowing about inflation, but that has nothing to do with this argument.

When Walmart raised its minimum wage to 9 and hour (after 90 days), they slashed the FUCK out of hours. I know. I was working at Walmart when this happened. My base hours dropped from 32 a week, to 24. That's a significant reduction. That's an entire day. I got lucky in that my boss could give me a few more by having me help out all over the store, but it was pretty fucking shitty.

The only way a federal wage increase is going to even really help those employees is if something enforces that all hired employees get a minimum hours or are allowed to work at more places. Walmart will try to stomp the shit outta that too.
#205 - thisisforgayboard (10/06/2016) [-]
Yes but that is WALMART.

I honestly do not understand why people work these shit jobs and actually expect to be able to support themselves on it and have a lot of extra money.. It's for highschoolers living with their parents.

Because "highschoolers living with their parents" weren't a significant percentage of the workforce. Just off my head I don't think half the people at my walmart were less than college level. That's all great in theory, but it doesn't work out that way in the real world.
#215 - thisisforgayboard (10/06/2016) [-]
Okay so those people can get another job, work more hours, or get education.
It's not the companies fault that you knowingly took a low skill job meant for kids and people who don't mind not making a lot of cash.

You can spend under a year getting licensed for a huge number of jobs and instantly go from $8 an hour to $15-30.

Also I make $10 an hour right now and support myself just fine, if you can't live on your states minimum wage you have serious financial problems that you should deal with.

I don't understand how you don't understand how it's not that fucking simple.
#237 - thisisforgayboard (10/06/2016) [-]
Explain it than because I am literally living what I said.

If you don't make enough money with a minimum wage job either get another or find a higher paying job.
User avatar
#238 - brokentrucker (10/06/2016) [-]
Okay, what if there are no higher paying jobs in the area? What if you've found yourself stuck in such a slump that you can't get out of your area? What if you're in debt because you were in a car accident and couldn't work? What if you're old and alone because life killed off most of your family? What if you have college and kids? What if your attempts to improve your life aren't fast enough to keep you above water?

None of these issues were ever my problem, but I worked alongside these kinds of people for ages. I worked alongside college grads that couldn't find a fucking job and had spent 5+ years at Walmart before they found a better job. I worked alongside people, barely making above minimum wage (which was 7.25 in my state) that couldn't afford to save hardly anything since bills, food (even cheap food) and rent and such ate up all they had. I currently make 11 an hour working full time and because of bills, I'd have trouble living alone, even if I cut out shit like internet, which actually is rather insignificant, because the cost of living around here is so high.

Saying "just get better" doesn't solve any fucking problems, and while, theoretically, anyone can improve their standing with relative ease, it isn't always that fucking simple.

So, good for you. I'm glad that you can make it on 10 an hour and found a better job or a good job. It's not always that fucking simple.
#239 - thisisforgayboard (10/06/2016) [-]
Mate I have made $10 an hour for 4 years.
I live in an apartment with one roomate, have internet, a motorcycle, a car, insurance, health insurance, phone, plenty of food, etc, etc.

I've got $20,000 worth of stocks and am still putting any extra money into them incase of injury and just for general saving.

1) Fucking move, but I highly doubt there are "no jobs" in your area that don't at least pay $15 an hour

2) Don't get in debt and you wouldn't be in a slump

3) Again, don't be a debt and have extra money saved for when things like this happens

4) Old and alone? This has nothing to do with anything. If you're implying that you wouldn't be able to work I think you'll be happy to hear that first world countries have benefit programs for elderly people

5) Don't have kids when you can't support them

6) Min wage can keep you alive no matter where you are

It's pretty fucking simple because at this point your only argument is "WELL I HAVE BIIIILS, IM IN DEEEEEEEEEEBT".

Maybe if people didn't spend their money like a fucking child and expect to live a posh life on minimum wage rather than live frugally it wouldn't be a problem.

>Can't move if you don't have the funds. The only good paying jobs in my area were management at places like Walmart. Everything else required some kind of training or education that wasn't readily available if you didn't have a car. There was ONE bus from what I could remember and it wasn't run daily, just a once in a while thing for shits and giggles

>Don't get in debt
You're fucking retarded. Sure, don't buy a quarter of a million dollar car and put yourself in debt, but hospitals can be fucking expensive. Life can fucking sideswipe you. I don't see how you don't get that? If you get hit by something devastating, like, I dunno...your son accidentally blowing his head off with a dropped shotgun in the back of your pick up truck, it makes it harder and harder to consolidate and keep your life on track.

>I can concede that, but I've seen plenty of older people still working their asses off.

>What if you have kids when you can support them and then life sideswipes you?

>Min wage only keeps you alive if you work fulltime. If you end up in a situation where you can't work full time, AKA, you get into an accident, like I've been implying (because I never once implied that any of the debt was self-inflicted).

Like, dude. A lot of this has to do with where you live. Small towns will fuck you. If you live in a bigger city, you have a lot more options, and less of an excuse, but that was never part of my argument.
#241 - thisisforgayboard (10/06/2016) [-]
1) Save money and than move, it really, really does not cost that much

2) Have insurance otherwise spend less on food and stupid shit and you'll be able to afford payments

3) Old people aren't magically free of having to work, this wasn't my argument and I'll most likely still be working when I'm an old man

4) Explain? If you get fired get another job, if you're injured find a work from home job, work several min wage jobs. "Life happens" is bullshit because there is almost always something you can do to fix the crap life gives you. Why should we change min wage for the 0.1% of people it might help?

5) I work 30 hours a week and make 14k a year (plenty to live off of) not including the extra 15-20 hours or so from my work at home job I took to help save cash.

6) I live in a 5000 population town.
