The problem is, there won't be any change if we let things continue.

It makes me sad that it's come to this, what we need to do is start looking for officials who aren't in it for themselves, not believe everything we see on the media for our political opinions, instead, go out and meet with people...

Never said it was, but if any of these people are in positions of power within their states, they don't necessarily need governmental allowance for this, they could just leave (like with the Civil War).
User avatar #159 - whiteyswag (11/16/2012) [-]
If it were that bad, it would happen regardless. This secession movement is more or less a middle finger to the federal government saying they are fed up with the way things are going now and are a demand for change.

Simple, succession isn't going to help anyone, it'll just hurt everyone, the nation AND the states that secede, we don't need more dependence on others than we already have.

Besides, why should the minority that wants this ruin it for the majority that doesn't? They aren't held here, those people are free to leave at any time.

It only takes twenty five thousand signatures, when there are usually millions in these states.
User avatar #204 - npfortytwo (11/16/2012) [-]
The petitions for secession could gain hundreds of thousands of signatures each (and in Texas, actually, they've already well cleared the 100,000 mark) and it won't make a lick of difference - when a petition passes 25,000 signatures, the White House is (allegedly) obligated to seriously consider the content in the petitions, and make a statement on it. Not immediately act on it.
User avatar #211 - lemanrouste (11/16/2012) [-]
Texas is weird when it comes to this kind of thing. But you're right, and obviously they don't need to immediately make a statement on it either, been waiting for Obama to make it for a while now (signatures have been high up for a while now).
User avatar #223 - npfortytwo (11/16/2012) [-]
I think the bigger issue - due to the fact that it's unlikely any state will secede - is the fact that our government has to address the idea of secession in the first place, in 2012 - that's pretty embarrassing.
User avatar #232 - lemanrouste (11/16/2012) [-]
Aye, that it is, but it isn't like this hasn't happened every single election though.

I think that all that effort is wasted, when we could be trying to fix our problems, rather than putting time into... whatever this is, just to hear the president recite rehearsed lines...
#174 - bazda (11/16/2012) [-]
Personally I don't think it's a bad idea. Not single states seceding to become individual nations but dividing the country into 2 countries. Split it into North and South, one half can be Blue America, the other can be Red America. There is obviously a major division in our country already, based mostly on political policies and views. Can you imagine how much bullshit would disappear over night if everyone in the entire country almost completely agreed on the majority of political issues? And it's not like anybody would get their feelings hurt. Nobody I know of who hold strong on their political stance is going to miss the same type of people from the other party.

Not only that, but I think it would be a great way to prove, once again, that socialism will always fail. Blue America could vote themselves all the tax increases and entitlement programs they wanted, and when their system eventually failed, as it inevitably would, they could have a nice third world country to live in.

Of course that's all just fantasy talk, but I find it fun to think about. Think about all the problems it would solve.
User avatar #177 - lemanrouste (11/16/2012) [-]
Lol, yeah, if only stuff like that worked.... life would be amazing.

Communism would work. Bi-partisan would work. Corruption wouldn't exist....

World peace, scientific advancement. Religions (or lack thereof) wouldn't hate one another or force their beliefs on others...

If only....
#178 - bazda (11/16/2012) [-]
Holy shit, you agree? I was fully expecting to return to a butt hurt flame-a-thon.

Good job dude, have a thumb! :D
User avatar #180 - lemanrouste (11/16/2012) [-]
Lol, I don't necessarily agree with a split in the country, but no need to be butt hurt over a varying opinion :P.
User avatar #148 - whiteyswag (11/16/2012) [-]
it takes 25,000 for the white house to acknowledge it. It would then have to go to congress etc etc. A petition isn't even remotely close to a bill.

i'm sorry, buy where is the attention whoring? you all do this after any OP says that she is female in the comments. she is correcting someone that claims she is not the one in the profile pic. yes she is a girl, yes she dresses goth or punk or emo or whatever the hell you want to call it. she does not deserve red thumbs for stating that she is a girl or having different fashion ideals than you. the god damned hate on this site is ridiculous.
if someone's a girl, they are a thumb whore
if it's about Justin Bieber, say he's gay a million times
see a repost, call it out and thumb down even if it's funny
black man in the picture, NIGGER NIGGER NIGGER
everyone is in a damn bandwagon and won't dare to try something new
fucking tired of this shit in the comments section
bring on the damned red thumbs i'm going down with this one

you know, the fact that op writes that she is a girl is thumbwhoring, does dude op write that?
User avatar #217 - thefoxyfox (11/14/2012) [-]
the difference is that someone was questioning her gender. she didnt out-right say, "hey! im a girl!" someone questioned her gender and she responded by saying she was a girl. ive seen guys ops do that too if people ask their gender, most commonly after the ever-popular Proff Oak "are you a boy or a girl" quote
