Also what is your favorite distro? I've only tried Ubuntu and Kali to mess around.
User avatar #175 - justsomenamelulz (12/08/2014) [-]
I would also strongly recommend OpenSuSE. It's a great distro that scales very well, for relatively new users to power users. There's a lot of neat stuff that the community cooked up that works incredibly well (one-click installers for packages from the opensuse website, searching for packages, solid documentation most of the time, etc).

Let me know if you run into any issues or if you have any questions (and I'm sure whiplasher would be able to answer your questions as well).

Personally, I prefer Fedora. But, honestly, I would not recommend it to a complete newbie, because it requires a bit more terminal work to use it. The only difference between distros that new users should be concerned of is the UI. If you like the Windows 7 interface, try Zorin OS. If you like Windows XP, try Linux Mint. If you like mac, try elementary OS or Deepin. Look them up on Google Images and see what suits your fancy.

Thanks! I noticed that the install feature on terminal was great! It's so simple I'm trying to get into web dev / design. Is there any advantages to doing that on Linux as far as you know?
#102 - whiplasher (12/06/2014) [-]
Definately. Although you should keep some things in mind. Web devs are split into 2 categories: front-end and back-end. Front-end means web-design, as in actually making the webpage, adding sounds, animations etc. For that, you'll need HTML, CSS and Javascript (not necesarily, but these are the most used). Back-end means making that website communicate with a server, log-in/register systems, etc. For that, you'll need an SQL, like MySQL, PostgreSQL etc. (I recommend MySQL if you're a beginner, it's quite easy to learn). And you'll also need a scripting language. The most common is PHP. Now, you've probably heard of it and leaning towards it, but I really don't recommend starting with PHP because it is, in my opinion, a total mess. You should learn Python with Django, or Ruby on Rails, as Python and Ruby are fantastic languages that actually can be used for a plethora of things, not just webdev. Especially Python.

And why you should do that on Linux? Here's why:
It has a ton of tools developed mainly for Linux that ease your work.
It's easily customisable, so you can make your workspace the way you want it. (that's big, trust me)
The terminal eases things immensely. You can just program in it, compile in it, test scripts in it, edit databases in it.
The package manager (the install feature, as you called it) helps things a lot, especially when you want to download extra libraries or modules for Python.
There's probably more. If you want my tip: dual-boot Linux and Windows. That's how I do it, and I use Windows every time I want to game on my pc, the rest of the time I use Linux.
To end this huge wall of text, I'll just recommend some very easy to use and visually pleasant distros: Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Ubuntu GNOME, Zorin OS, Deepin, elementary OS.

Started using OpenSuSE (One-click intsallers? Package searching even through personal repos cooked up by the community/OBS? Unf) solely about 5 years ago now. Haven't gone back to Windows yet.

Also Dota 2. Aw yiss.

Totally agree. I've been running Linux for like half a year now, and ran it when I was 13 year old or so prior to this. Always been easy to me. Not too long ago, I installed Xubuntu on my 10 year old autistic brother's PC, and he says he never wants to use Windows again

Yep. There are some theories that the Illuminati are gonna force him to be reborn as the Star Child, with a new body and more power, but what they want to do is illegal in the Imperium. From what I remember, they want to kill the descendants of the Emperor in some kind of sacrifical ritual and give the Emperor a new body. Of course, these are just theories.
User avatar #45 to #44 - satrenkotheone ONLINE (09/20/2013) [-]
Yep, and then there's the sensei or something solution which was more or less the same thing I think. Collecting the Emperors sons and sacrificing him so that he can be reborn.
User avatar #46 to #45 - whiplasher (09/20/2013) [-]
Oh, yeah, I think I might've mixed things. Anyway, to be honest, out of all the gods in the Warhammer 40k universe, I like Slaanesh and the C'tan the best. Slaanesh is wicked cool, in my opinion, and the C'tan are just overpowered.
User avatar #47 to #46 - satrenkotheone ONLINE (09/20/2013) [-]
Slaanesh is coolest(also a user here on FJ) and the C'tan can be killed and **** like that though, well at least severely weakened.

I like Tzeentch a lot.
User avatar #48 to #47 - whiplasher (09/20/2013) [-]
Tzeentch is alright, but I don't really think of him as a Chaos God. Sure, he lives in the Warp, but he is not necessarily evil, he is just...bored, twisting fates and all that. I like Khorne the least, because he is just a generic chaotic evil, in my opinion. Nurgle is cool. the second best Chaos God for me, mainly because his daemons look sick(literally) and he is like a father figure for his followes.
User avatar #49 to #48 - satrenkotheone ONLINE (09/20/2013) [-]
Nah man Tzeentch is my second favourite followed by Nurgle close after.

Khorne is just boring as **** so he can bugger off.

User avatar #52 to #51 - whiplasher (09/20/2013) [-]
Since Dawn of War II (well, Retribution) is dissapointing, it's not a problem. My favorite DoW race are the Tau and the Space Nuns. Yours?
User avatar #53 to #52 - satrenkotheone ONLINE (09/20/2013) [-]
>Space Nuns

Sisters of Battle I would presume.

Imperial Guard because I can run my enemies over with my tank.
User avatar #54 to #53 - whiplasher (09/20/2013) [-]
I like the iGuards too, but the Space Nuns totally devastate them (of course, in my humble opinion). Since the Nuns' weaponry are mostly based on flamers, and since iG's have low morale, their squads would break with ease. And their vehicles are no match for the Celestians, which absolutely murder pretty much any armor (wel, probably not a Baneblade).
User avatar #55 to #54 - satrenkotheone ONLINE (09/20/2013) [-]
I usually just wait around and build up strong defences until Baneblade is available and then I spearhed with it and have Leman Russ's and Bassies backing me up whilst sending millions of guardsmen to their death just to draw fire and get rid of the more annoying enemies the Baneblade shouldn't focus on. I usually send a tech priest or two with the bane.
User avatar #56 to #55 - whiplasher (09/20/2013) [-]
When things like these happen I usually harass my enemy like crazy, focusing on destryoing a building at a time.

I wish I could play Dark Eldars, since I find them so damn cool, but I really can't, I get my arse kicked every time I play DE.
User avatar #57 to #56 - satrenkotheone ONLINE (09/20/2013) [-]
I haven't played the game too much to be honest.

I prefer the Total War series. Now Creative Assembly might make a Warhammer game since they have the licence.

Yeah, I'm really excited about that. I hope it'll be a Warhammer 40k game, not a Warhammer Fantasy game, since I know pretty much nothing about that.

I tried getting into the Total War series, I triec Rome, Napoleon, Shogun 2 and Rome, but I just can't get used to them. I'm more into 4x games, like Europa Universalis 4, which I find amazing.

Anyway, nice talking to you, mate. But I'm gonna go to sleep, I'm tired. Good luck and have fun tomorrow!
User avatar #59 to #58 - satrenkotheone ONLINE (09/20/2013) [-]
I think they'll do a Warhammer fantasy first because it's the easiest for them to do.

Ah yes, I love the EU games and especially this new one. Crusader Kings 2 is pretty good and so is Victoria 2.

Ok... bye...

Awww, mate. It's okay, it doesn't have to start that fast. Nobody in the kitchen today?
#25 to #24 - satrenkotheone ONLINE (09/20/2013) [-]
I'm sorry... I didn't go to the kitchen... I don't feel the need to go somewhere I can't do anything.... I have to go to the city tomorrow.... it's scary because my hometown only had like a thousand people living in it and now there's over 200 thousand people around me.
User avatar #26 to #25 - whiplasher (09/20/2013) [-]
Oh, mate. You really shouldn't apologise to me.

Also, big cities can be intimidating, I that's true, but they're not so bad! Why are you going for?
User avatar #27 to #26 - satrenkotheone ONLINE (09/20/2013) [-]
I need to get plates and cutlery...
User avatar #28 to #27 - whiplasher (09/20/2013) [-]
I understand. You should try postponing this thing, because the lack of plates and cutlery might give you a reason to get in that kitchen, you know, to borrow some!

Still, I'm glad you remembered that promise. It might be a small improvement!
User avatar #29 to #28 - satrenkotheone ONLINE (09/20/2013) [-]
No I need the plates and cutlery to actually have a good reason to go into the kitchen.
User avatar #30 to #29 - whiplasher (09/20/2013) [-]
Oh, sorry then! Good! Motivation!
User avatar #31 to #30 - satrenkotheone ONLINE (09/20/2013) [-]
Yeah... I just have to go into town alone...
User avatar #32 to #31 - whiplasher (09/20/2013) [-]
It's not that bad, honestly, I do it all the time. Sure, there are a lot of people, which can be intimidating, but a pair of headphones in your ears and a playlist of your favorite songs and all those people couldn't matter less!
User avatar #33 to #32 - satrenkotheone ONLINE (09/20/2013) [-]
I don't have headphones...
User avatar #34 to #33 - whiplasher (09/20/2013) [-]
No biggie, What I'm saying is that it's easy to get distracted and ignore the ocean of people passing by. I usually try to think of stories, mostly regarding Warhammer 40k fanfic.
#35 to #34 - satrenkotheone ONLINE (09/20/2013) [-]
I see...

I often try to dream myself away from this world and into another character... a girl or woman of some importance...
User avatar #36 to #35 - whiplasher (09/20/2013) [-]
Whatever works for you, mate. I've been to London once, and I can say it's a fairly nice place. I assume you'll go to Brighton (from what I remember, and I suppose that's a city) and I suppose it shouldn't be too different!
User avatar #37 to #36 - satrenkotheone ONLINE (09/20/2013) [-]
Yeah but I'm not used to cities at all since Norway basically doesn't have cities.

I like the Imperial Guard better than Astartes.
User avatar #38 to #37 - whiplasher (09/20/2013) [-]
It's alright, not that hard to get used to the city, I believe!

Can't say the same, since I like the Novamarines very much, but I do like Imperial Guard too. Although, lorewise, the Dark Eldars are my favorite.
User avatar #39 to #38 - satrenkotheone ONLINE (09/20/2013) [-]
It might be.

Novamarines? Can't say I've heard of them. Never read 40k fic nor codex either just on the Internet.
User avatar #40 to #39 - whiplasher (09/20/2013) [-]
Good luck, and, who knows, you might have fun!

They are derived from the Ultramarines. I read a few books and comics based on Warhammer 40k, but most of my W40k knowledge comes from Lexicanum and Warhammeer 40k Wiki.
User avatar #41 to #40 - satrenkotheone ONLINE (09/20/2013) [-]
Maybe.

Same for me about 40k lore. I wish the Emperor hadn't gone ahead and got himself in a coma.
User avatar #42 to #41 - whiplasher (09/20/2013) [-]
Well, weren't for Him, Horus and his gang of evil-doers would've done much more damage to the Imperium. He wanted to end it once and for all, before things would get out of hand, even though that nearly killed Him.
User avatar #43 to #42 - satrenkotheone ONLINE (09/20/2013) [-]
I know I know. It's just a shame that he is in a coma. With the Emperor alive the Imperium wouldn't be in a state of decline.

To be honest, I didn't make them. But now that I saw that people like them, I will make more.

Are you kidding me? I friggin' love the Crimson Fists! They are one of my favorite chapters, my favorite being the Novamarines.

Whiplasher, Crimson Fists Captain 7th company Assault Marines
wear your rank with pride
User avatar #8 to #7 - whiplasher (05/06/2013) [-]
Well ain't that just dandy. I'd better get a terminator armor too.
User avatar #9 to #8 - konradkurze (05/07/2013) [-]
reminds me of a way to abuse rules

technically theres no rule saying someone cant have terminator armour AND a jump pack
ill have to check points costs, but if things are affordable, technically you could have your commander wearing terminator armor for 2+ save, wearing a jump pack for 12" normal move, and riding a bike for 12" assault move....so move 24" a turn really
