I attribute at least 70% of the hate towards SAO as misatributed from the fanbase towards the show.

"SAO was above average"

then what was overlord
#169 - mrforte (04/02/2016) [-]
Don't hate me, but I actually thought Overlord was mediocre. It's an entertaining concept to be sure, but it never actually goes anywhere. The world/lore is never fleshed out, and story-wise It's just a few thinly-spread plot points where the protagonist OP's his way through everything.

good?

as someone who has read the novels of both, I gotta say Overlord become rather boring with the concept "I am more OP than you could possibly imagine" running for a couple hundred pages.

SAO on the other hand, has plenty of psychology.

But don't get me wrong, in terms of adaptation the Overlord one is definately better by far.

You missed th point of NGNL. The two MCs were the representatives of humanity. The girl was a natural born genuis, and when the male mc met her in childhood he realized how lacking and "empty" he was. So he worked hard to stand as an equal with her. The two eventually develop a pretty deep relationship. She represents humanities logic, and pure and raw talent. He represents the ultimate result of hard work and human creativity. Together they are the pinnacle of humanity. Separated is not the same story. They basically cover each others weaknesses and go against the strongest foes to prove that humanity has the most potential. that anime is a hype train I love it and I don't think the work gets enough credit.

I've read all the novels upto volume 6. The MC was extraordinary even at a young age, as far as I remember. At the point where he meats with his "sister" he is already famed as special and is an outcast from his peers.

Well the above is just what I gathered form the anime, she's pure logic, he's extremely creative. She's pure talent, he has to work harder to keep up. Like two hemispheres of the brain. Right and Left side, together, unstoppable. I loved that about them. I need to read the LNs myself because it's not like we'll ever get any sequels.

One of the later volumes tells a story from during the war. It is told by Ted.

I'm not gonna go into details so as to not spoil things, but I definately recommend reading the novels. That specific volume was very strong.

Anyway, in that volume, despite Ted declining any relation to the main characters, still gives rise to quite some speculation. I'm trying hard not to spoil anything, in the end - just read the novels.
