Oh I know, but zombies only make the moaning noise to alert other zombies. It's kind of like a dinner bell. (I'm working off the zombie survival guide here,it's the most realistic book out there.) So I mean, someone gets bit, they hide somewhere because they don't want to hurt someone, and then some poor bastard walks into the room they were hiding in,and the zombie person gets the drop on them due to that. But yes, zombies are not ninjas or magical creatures. They're..really...reaaaally fucking stupid.

Yeah, but if they're in a confined space and they can't see through it/hear anything,it's kind of like how if you put a blanket over a bird cage, they think it's night time and go to sleep. As long as no survivors are nearby and the zombie is caged away in a box or something, they'd just kind of sit there like a bag of potatoes.

It's a good idea to bang on the walls and make noise to attract zombies while clearing a place out, open the door and jump back, give it a good 10 seconds. If you get jumped a fellow soldier can help you out before the zombie could harm you.
#159 - hazenberdan (04/18/2014) [-]
Yeah, the guide recommends that. Also, they say to travel in a small group of 2-3 people. On the defense, tons of people are good. On the move, not really. Your team has to move as one, kill as one,and search as one. Recommends three, because then everyone can split up the ammunition evenly without worrying about it weighing you down. (I know ammo doesn't weigh much, but you get enough of anything and it gets heavy. More people, more ammo because they can help carry it.) And if you DON'T get a zombie, maybe you'll get lucky and find a hidden survivor who's friendly and not infected to take back to camp. The more people at your base the better, because then there's more people to do jobs around the base.

I agree with 3 people per group but you could have more than 1 group clearing an area at the same time, just stay out of each other's way and be aware of the other's location.
#162 - hazenberdan (04/18/2014) [-]
That'd be difficult to coordinate, but it's entirely possible. group 1 takes floor 1,group 2 takes floor two,etc etc. If you can,get ahold of a copy of the zombie survival guide, you may like it. It's around 2-3 hundred pages long, but it's a pretty good read. A friend of mine got it for me when I was 14 or 15.

I have a friend who has it, might borrow from him someday. I honestly feel like the only viable "zombie apocalypse" is 90% patient zero infection or 28 days later. 90% would end up like The walking dead, 28 days later... that would be a real challenge to survive. You'd need a weapon on-hand from the get-go or you'd need to survive melee combat with a bunch which is extremely risky/suicidal for most people given their vicious and unpredictable nature.
#165 - hazenberdan (04/18/2014) [-]
Yeah,if it's the iconic zombie,(Slow as shit, dumber than a bag of bricks, clumsier than a newborn doe on ice) all you'd really have to do is put up a few walls around your house and keep an eye out with a rifle and a binocular. But if we get the fast zombie(aka infected, like 28 days later,L4D,Halo,Dead Island, etc etc)you need a decently strong blade of some form, possibly a longsword or a kukri/machete. Not to mention you WOULD need an automatic weapon. Slow, bolt action rifles or semi auto rifles would leave you little more than food. ESPECIALLY if it's the L4D variety, with "special" infected.

I wouldn't want to engage 28's in melee at all. I'd impale them and they'd ignore it. You'd have to cut their limbs off but ti's not like they'll give you a cosy opportunity to do so. Fighting rabid, enraged enemies is very different to any other kind of enemy.

You'd be surprised at how many people have become chow for a zombie that was just kind of chilling in a hidden place, like a closet or an airvent. I see what you're saying, but keep in mind, zombies don't have limits like us humans. They don't recoil from pain, they don't fear, they only have one desire. To feed on human flesh. And if they get ahold of you, they hold on good. If they can hold on long enough to rip open your protective gear......I mean, realisticaly,I HOPE the military would be doing better than they do in the movies. (IE,always dying first.) I mean,we have TANKS. You could just RUN OVER A ZOMBIE AND IT WOULD BE DEAD. I think a few would probably die or turn, but for the most part we'd win.

The thing is, in media zombies are put in air vents and broom cupboards far more than they should be. Also, they suddenly don't make sounds which is bollocks. They're clumsy as fuck and stupid, they would not be sneaky, realistically.

Undead, which despite the current culture would be horrendously terrifying, mind numbingly so. My brother, a career marine, agrees with me that is exactly what would happen.
User avatar #182 - wallbuilder (04/18/2014) [-]
If they were freaked out they could just back off to collect themselves. Protective gear would stop zombies from being able to hurt them because they don't think to avoid protective gear or to take it off. They'd(them or fellow soldiers) just throw the zombies away if they locked up.

And I still don't really agree. They're trained to combat "the enemy". There would be shock factor but once the adrenaline kicks in and they collect themselves they'd function. It's not like zombies are the swiftest of threats that don't give you time to think.
User avatar #185 - vatra (04/18/2014) [-]
Well, on that last point it depends on the "type" of zombie it ended up being, as well as how many there are, doesn't matter if they are slow as snails if there is 500 coming at you all at once. Which according to zombie lore, is bound to happen when ever there is a mass gathering of humans in one spot for a long time.

But to the first point, how could they take a step back? They have to deal with the public and zombies, not to mention that they would be massively understaffed because they would have to set up these quarantines practically everywhere, either that or just set up a few, but then those are more of fortresses and wouldn't be very effective because the majority of the areas would be free of their intervention.
User avatar #187 - wallbuilder (04/18/2014) [-]
Let's just assume walking dead style, it's the most common. I'm talking about the initial outbreak. It's not like, bam, 99% of people are zombies. The military would eventually be called after a large incident happened, they'd arrive and start taking down zombies. By taking a step back I mean literally, not metaphorically. Taking the time to come to terms with what they need to do if they haven't already. Also, 500 zombies moving at 5km/h(3.5mp/h) is still moving at 5km/h. You can outrun them, easily. You can mount obstacles, use vehicles, climb ladders or other things.
User avatar #209 - vatra (04/18/2014) [-]
Reached the comment limit.

I must not have been clear on my points. Because the human part of dangers is why I'm saying it would be so bad. In this situation people would lose their shit. My original comment points a lot of the human factors out decently. Now imagine the military has to deal with all of that, as well as undead walking cesspools of infection that only stop moving if you do enough damage to their head. Not to mention this thing could be your own mother.

Personally I don't think you are taking them seriously enough, I think there would be runners. Most people wouldn't stand a chance. How do you hit something in the head that is sprinting at you in an erratic gait. Military might be able to, but they'd waste a lot of ammo.
User avatar #193 - vatra (04/18/2014) [-]
Military likes to set up bases, and tend to have an attitude of defend the base. So you get a mass horde knocking on the door, they should just abandon the base and regroup, more than likely at first they will defend the base. And get wiped out. Suddenly there is panic in the military, setting up permanent staging areas doesn't work. Unless they can pull something off like a large concrete wall in an area without infected. But again, that's a fortress, and isn't very effective at all. Of course that would work for protecting citizens, but then they have to worry about crime and civilian unrest.

The only situation I can see the military being relatively successful is a fortress situation where they rule over their civilian charges with a spiked iron fist. Which of course makes them more hated than the undead.
User avatar #206 - wallbuilder (04/18/2014) [-]
Humans are far more dangerous than zombies*
User avatar #205 - wallbuilder (04/18/2014) [-]
There wouldn't be massive hordes, it would get stopped before then. And seriously? 10 LMG's would tear through walls of zombies, if they were grouped that much, tanks shots would annihilate them if they decided to use weapons with collateral damage. And helicopters could destroy them without concern. You've been taking media-fied zombies too seriously. Think about how it would happen in reality. A soldier and 30 zombies stand 20 yards apart. Lets say this guy is pretty good, a good shot and not scared(honestly, I think zombies would be FAR less scary than a live-fire firefight, they would just have more momentary shock factor). Without any difficulty at all he could kill them all, assuming he had ammo. If he ran out of ammo, he can leave. Now if you have more soldiers working together they can kill even more zombies! Now give them some helicopters and there's literally nothing the zombies can do. Throw in 4 mounted machine guns and you can tear a horde apart. You are literally saying that humans < zombies. Zombies are FAR more dangerous than humans and we've fought each oher for millenia. Mosquitoes are a bigger threat than a common zombie outbreak would be.

#134 - hazenberdan (04/18/2014) [-]
Well, maybe. If you run out of ammo you're kind of fucked. Most soldiers would use automatics, yes? I know they're more disciplined, but you get undead past your comfort zone, and you start to panic. You start to panic, you flip the switch to rock n' roll, and start mowing down zombies. You run out of ammo. Plus, riot gear would not grant immortality. Zombies have no limits on their bodies, they will attack until they fall apart. So you get three or four determined zombies, and you're just canned food. But other then that, you're pretty spot on.
User avatar #138 - wallbuilder (04/18/2014) [-]
"Oh, out of ammo. Let's walk away now."
And this is before the proper outbreak has happened. There are very few zombies. Like, 1/20 people in a specific area contaminated. Let's say a hospital. They'd wall off the area with barricades and send soldiers in, they'd progress with caution and keep clear vision because they know to be aware of your surroundings. The only way a zombie could kill a soldier is with overwhelming numbers or by surprise. And there's their protective gear, which would basically make them unbiteable.
#140 - hazenberdan (04/18/2014) [-]

Cheers lad, I'm impressed you remember but I guess I just have a **** memory. How longs the manga and how closely does it follow the original story?
#56 to #55 - afaggot (06/16/2013) [-]
The anime covered the first 4 episodes of the manga.
The manga is 8 episodes in all so it's about twice as long as the manga.
As far as I know; the anime is based off the manga. However the manga has more depth to it. You see get to see a lot more off the subtle exchanges that aren't important to the overall story, but make you feel closer to the characters.
Right now the manga is only being translated by one subbing group: You need to login to view this link
They've recently completed episode 3, and that means you can read the story unbroken up to the end of episode 5. (They've stated that they will probably release the last chapters of episode 5 next month).
Episodes 6, 7, and 8 have been partially translated, and I think it's very likely that they could finish translating the manga before the end of the year.
If you want to buy the manga in english, I'm fairly sure that the first 2 episodes are available.
Overall I'd say it's worth it to follow the manga, and just reading the first 5 episodes will take you a week if you read carefully, and savor every moment.
User avatar #57 to #56 - wallbuilder ONLINE (06/16/2013) [-]
Cool, but are you sure the anime was based off the manga? I thought it was based on the VN.
User avatar #58 to #57 - afaggot (06/16/2013) [-]
I think the anime off the manga, but I know that the manga was based of the VN.
So in theory both of them could be based off the VN, but I'm not sure.
However I did recently discover that the VN has a PS3 port, and the graphics look pretty nice (so it might be possible to actually play it).

Holy **** , Umineko with good graphics. Is it translated or is there a PC version that's translated? Also, do you know what volumes/arc it covers from the manga/vn?
User avatar #60 to #59 - afaggot (06/16/2013) [-]
Sorry, I only found out about the PS3 port a day or two ago.
I've been busy reading episodes 4 and 5 of the manga, so I haven't had time to look into the VN.
However if you look at the promo's desc, it states it only covers the first 4 episodes.
User avatar #61 to #60 - wallbuilder ONLINE (06/16/2013) [-]
Well, it's a start. Hopefully it gets a PC version which'll be much easier to translate.
User avatar #62 to #61 - afaggot (06/16/2013) [-]
I looked into it a bit more, and it seems there is a second VN for the chiru arcs (episodes 5-8).

As for it getting a PC version, I doubt it.
It was released several years ago, and seems to be exclusive the PS3.
I'm still looking into things, I'll tell you if I find anything interesting.

Skip to the last page of that forum, and you'll see the latest news on the english patch of the VN. Which is that nothing has changed in the two years since the forum started, and the companies affiliated with the Umineko franchise have little to no interest in releasing the VNs in the west.
It's a bit dissapointing, but I prefer the manga anyway.
User avatar #65 to #64 - wallbuilder ONLINE (06/16/2013) [-]
Damn... well, I did a bit of looking myself and there's patches for the original PC version that give it the same voices and probably some patches for visual updates too. Apart from that, they're basically the same game apparently so I'll have to chase up those patches when I go to play it.
User avatar #66 to #65 - afaggot (06/16/2013) [-]
I don't think I'm going to play the VN, because the graphics would probably ruin it for me.
You can do what ever you want, but I highly reccommend the manga.
