If you join any branch, you gotta be ready for nonsense. BMT has a lot of homesickness, yelling for literally no reason, and locker room antics. Whole military is currently terrified of sexual assault incidents so you'll get LOTS of briefings that sum up to "don't rape people, and tell us if you're raped". Air Force had some big maltraining incidents, so while at basic training you likely won't be given punishment workouts unless something changes in the near future. You will literally not hear "drop and give me 20" or any equivalent. As a matter of fact lots of my flight mates agree that Basic is currently too easy, and we think more people should have been kicked out, as well as more physically strenuous. But as my old Tech instructor said, if a maintainer suddenly has to run a mile in 8 minutes, we've probably lost that battle.
Navy basic is pretty kickass right now, they spent millions on some new programs that I was insanely jealous of when I heard of. And I've hear marine basic is exactly what you'd expect it to be!

Honestly I dunno what enlisted life in marines is like. I know they stay more active no matter what career field theyre in, but I couldn't tell you if they enjoy their bases, if their food services are any good, if their gate guards and personnel troops like their boses... couldn't even begin to hazard a guess. I know I respect the hell out of every retired marine I've met, upstanding guys

Yeah, I've heard life is a pretty solid Okay in the Marines. Plus I'm going for Officer as well. Only problem I'm having is the whole "Getting in shape" thing. Not that I'm too fat, it's that I'm took skinny and need to put on some weight. But still, I'm committed, so I'm willing to put the work in

As long as you match minimum weight requirements you can make it. I went in thin as a rail and barely able to considered "fit", but I gained 10 pounds by the end of basic, if primarily just legs and arms. Do not think that being a bodybuilder in the gym is what they want. They have fitness standards for you to meet. Ought to be pushup, situps, mile and a half run, and probably pull ups for marines. Look up the standards, start practicing now. Running in particular, if not to build speed and pace, just to work out your lungs

No worries, I've done the research. For a max score on the PFT I need to run an 18 minute 3 mile, 20 Pullups, I think timed to about 2 minutes, and 100 crunches in 2 minutes. And, for an officer, I want to be able to score as high as possible to be competitive, especially for Combat Arms.

Actually looking to be infantry officer? Props to you! Yup, just start working at it. Don't really need to do any exercises except for those to help you increase your numbers, maybe look up recommendations online.
You researched officer training much? Got your degree or a plan to get it? Ready to lead fellow candy-o's?

Infantry, Armor or Artillery, whichever they'll take me for. And yeah, I've looked up a good deal on officer training. I'm going into the last year of my degree, and hell yeah I'm ready! A bit worried about how I'll do, but that's normal I guess. Luckily my dad was an officer in the Fire Department so he's given me some tips on leading people, as well I've looked into how officers throughout history and how they led their men, both their good ideas and bad ones, so I'm hoping I'll do good.

Please be aware of how enlisted think of those who just become officers. You'd be what's called a "butter bar". Butter bars are infamous for poor leadership, and huge egos. Known for not respecting those below them that are far more experienced, and thinking they actually know what they're doing.
Not sure if you said what branch you said you were going into, but just don't forget about the lowly Lance Corporals. They're often more experienced than you, so respect what they have to say as someone from the front line. Don't let them walk all over you of course, but don't ignore them, or you're going to be another butter bar to despise. Same goes for the NCOs, those guys could be Colonels in terms of experience, but they're lower rank than you because they're enlisted, but in reality they're worth far more than you. Especially respect the advice and counsel of someone that's been in the military for a decade longer than you. Don't be the typical dumbass butter bar.

Don't worry, I very much know all about Butter Bars and I intend to not be that bad. I'm planning on joining the Marines, and I know to listen to the people who've been in longer than I have, and I fully intend to take their advice. As well, I find that I'm generally good at navigating over land, haha

Well, most back line people look forward to deployments, just so we can feel the impact we're having as we support front line troops. I mean, in maintenance you become a hero if you rush out to a burning plane and fight fire long enough to get the crew out, but infantry does the tough job every deployment. Anxious as it may make you someday, we like helping you get set up to go, we love fixing the planes you ride and that support ya
