But that would make the melting and the magnet part redundant. It would leave you with a ballistic firearm, which is already how guns work. If magnets would be used to propel the stuff, however...

It's only moving down due to gravity, and is no longer affected by the magnetic field after it's turned to liquid...I think what you're looking for is more towards the catapult area
