I love the fact that Bran made someone mentally retarded so he could hold a door decades later
He literally time-traveled Hodor into retardation so he could have a few extra seconds to run from the Wights
Now I really can't wait for the Winds of Winter to see how that plays out in the books

Real talk though, Hodor was like, the only truly innocent person in the show
He was the one guy that did literally nothing to deserve death, and he went out like a champ
I like how Jaqen had that conversation with Arya about good people dying even though they don't deserve it
I should have known they were about to kill off a character at that point
User avatar
#223 - nustix (05/24/2016) [-]
I thought Bran, was warging old hodor and in the process accidentally also warged young hodor. Making him retarded, I can't imagine Bran purposefully doing that that would be really out of character for him.
#303 - Jowi (05/25/2016) [-]
I think because Fran was warging Hodor but at the same time in the same period of time as him meant that he linked the two versions together.
Partly the stress of it, partly watching himself die, caused his mind to fracture.
User avatar
#220 - zeunfunnyguy (05/24/2016) [-]
still don't understand why hodor had to become retarded.

I understand that bran took control over hodor to make him move at all, and that it was bran who controlled hodor to hold the door.

i understand that bran was in his mind travelling back in time while that was happening, but why did he have to do something on yung hodor to control old hodor?

was makig yung hodor collapse become retarded the only way for bran to reach from back in time to present?

Because if you were a child who instantaneously felt the sensation of a middle aged man getting yelled at to hold off a horde of zombies stabbing him through a door during a snowstorm, you'd get pretty fucked up in the head.
#238 - griphingly (05/24/2016) [-]
My understandig is that Bran "linked" old and young Hodor. Young Hodor literally experienced his death, decades in advance. Now if that doesn't make you go a little nuts, then I don't know what would.

Not to mention that Bran didn't have to do it if he just didn't fuck up....it's in the stark blood to fuck up tho.

I want to like Arya, but she is making it hard....she's at least mile better than fucking Sansa. Sansa is the worst and she would be more useful dead. I hope she dies. I also hope "Jaqen H'ghar" hunts and kills Arya if she fucks the mission.
User avatar

I like her because she has very clear determined goals (kill these people), and is also fairly in charge of what she is doing. Like, it's fun to just follow her developing into more and more deadlier character.
User avatar
#215 - cringeboisixnine (05/24/2016) [-]
It would be fine if that was all there is too her, but she always let's emotions control her and I think it's going to be her downfall. Anyone who saw her in the audience of the play would be suspicious because she dropped her act.
#286 - anon (05/24/2016) [-]
I think you're forgetting that this character is supposed to be a little girl. Of course there are emotions ruling over her, she's just some fucking little apprentice, she's not shit yet.
Also, making her an instant, emotionless badass hitgirl type probably wouldn't be very interesting.

And the whole Sansa story line seems like it's finally getting interesting..

This season of Game of Thrones has nothing to do with the book series.

It has officially become it's own franchise and story with George R.R. Martins blessing to do so.

GRRM has given the producers free reign over the series to do whatever they want.
Game of Thrones the TV series has officially left the book world and will not be returning.

Im not saying they will....in fact theres no way in hell they will. doing that story arc would involve bringing in a character called Lady Stoneheart who not only kills Podrick but another major character. Overall its a little too ridiculous to add amongst the other arcs.

Book spoiler for the guy in the tree: They cut it out of the show because it would take to much time. But it's heavily hinted that he is a 130 year old man named Bloodraven. He was a bastard of two targaryens and became lord commander of the Night's Watch before disapearing

goddamn, after reading the tales of dunk and egg bloodraven is actually one of my fav characters.
User avatar
#191 - toensix (05/24/2016) [-]
I understand your frustration but I don't mind it at all. The show has been a great adaptation. But that's what it is, an adaptation. We shouldn't expect a one on one recreation on tv because that wouldn't be good tv. Sure Bloodraven is a fascinating character. But would he really have contributed to the grand story? Would there be time to explain who he is and why he is important. Would this be interesting to watch for non-book readers? I don't think it would be so I don't mind the change.
User avatar
#196 - rjgnal (05/24/2016) [-]
its not about showing the character and giving him a story arc, but rather giving him the personality traits that he has in the original story. the cunning ex-hand of the king that was able to smell a rebellion from half a continent away. also couldnt have hurt if they made him look like in the books, wouldve barely needed any cgi.
instead of the nature and time demi-god that is literally tied to the land we get this old senile fart that greets the kids while doing jumping jacks in the middle of the hall.

Can anyone please explain to me how can Bran travel to the past AND influence it?
I'm genuinely confused. I thought he was just viewing old "Records" of the past not actually traveling to the past.
#42 - anon (05/24/2016) [-]
warning block oh text

2 episodes we see the scene where his father gets his ass saved, and he shouts at his father and he "hears" him. next the most recent episode we see that the white walker could see and interact with him in his "vision" so not even going into the hodor vision this shows that hes not just seeing the time and place his consciousness is actually physically there in some sense. now going to hodors vision it shows that he can physically modify the time line. (though we are seeing the after effects of the time line already have been modified before we knew it was)

This leads me to believe that we could possibly point out other spots that may have already been modified if GRRM has thought this far ahead from the beginning of his novels as hodor.
User avatar
#54 - aceboy (05/24/2016) [-]
Thx but that still didn't answer my question: How or through what means could Bran achieve this time-space traveling of his consciousness? It was so far theorized that this was possible thanks to the carved trees but when Bran influenced his father there were no carved trees anywhere close to that region, not even by miles.
And if the carved trees are truly the means through which it is possible to do this type of warging how are they connected with the timeline?
Or is Bran a time traveler just because of his special gift that he was somehow born with (something that is similar to Omnipotence) and he could do it whenever or however he wants it and nothing more, and i'm just looking too much into it?
User avatar
#104 - toensix (05/24/2016) [-]
All right I'll try to explain it because they go a lot deeper into in the books.

The time-space traveling happens because of through Weirwood trees. 'The Old Gods' are actually greenseers like Bran and the Three-Eyed Crow looking through the trees and influencing animals. This is one of the reasons people say there are no Old Gods in the South. This is because most weirwoods were cut down in the south.

You were right to point out that bran shouldn't have been able to see his father at the tower of joy. But this scene is very important to the story and there wasn't really a better way to show it to the viewer (in the book the scene takes place in a dream of Ned way back in book1) as the only man who was there and is still alive has yet to make an appearance in both the book and the show.

Bran has a very special gift but it's not an unique one. There have been many greenseers before him and he's just as powerful as them.

The time-travel works simliarly to Harry Potter, were the time line can not be changed but the past can be influenced by the future. Only that influence was always there and there's no way to change the outcome. People do appear to hear whispers from greenseers when around Weirwoods. Ned seems to hear Bran in the show, and Theon, in the books, hears someone(it's Bran) cry out his name when he's in the godswood in Winterfell. There's also one chapter in which Jon is warging Ghost in a dream and he sees a weirwood that seems to have Bran's face but with three eyes (a third eye is linked to being a greenseer). In it Jon wonders if his brother always had three eyes(it's dream, he isn't thinking straight). And the tree replies: Not Always, not before the crow. But when this chapter takes place, Bran is still in Winterfell and can barely warg Summer. Even three books later he has never reached out to Ghost or Jon in such a manner.

Very interesting stuff and I look forward to learning more about it.
#128 - aceboy (05/24/2016) [-]
Thx, I needed some closure on this topic.
#62 - verycoolcat (05/24/2016) [-]
It's dependent on how GOT handles the predestination paradox. That if he attempts to change time nothing would change in the present because it was supposed to happen that way.

I.e you kill Hitler as a baby and Hitler was actually another baby that their maid had stolen and covered up who grows up to be the Nazi leader.
#80 - drinpa (05/24/2016) [-]
There's a pretty great theory that everything is Bran's fault....

There's way more evidence than what I'm going to mention here by people with wayyy more time on their hands, but I started seeing this after his father 'heard' him, but I'm not sure how old it is. The theory is Bran will try and go back and 'fix' things by trying to talk to The Mad King Aerys (Before he was mad) and prevent the whole rebellion, thus his father never has to go to be hand and nothing bad happens etc. The theory says that it is Bran trying to talk to him are voices that drive Aerys mad instead, thus causing everything.
#83 - verycoolcat (05/24/2016) [-]
I really doubt any of that would happen

Yep, sounds fairly implausible, but I also didn't expect Time Travel period. The show thus far has been making a habit of answering questions the book left open, I don't know if Martin intended to leave things open or if the next book will be as reveal-y, but it really seems like the show producers for this (And a lot of shows/movies based on books) have to answer questions that otherwise may have been left open.

Few examples I can think of from the show: Hodor's backstory period (Time travel funzies), origin of white walkers, what happens to the babies Crastor was leaving to the White Walkers, Ser Strong being Gregor Clegane [In the books that was never said, and last season start of this one they acted like it was a secret, then everyone just suddenly starts calling him Ser Gregor]...and that's all I can think of right this second. But yeah it just seems like shows in general don't trust the audiences as much without giving a blatant explanation for everything (Trying to avoid being like Lost? lol).

What you are looking at is people reading the books and trying to make reasoning with the changes with the show.

In the books, they left mystery of certain characters. However it would be obvious it's clegane in the show due to the size of the actor.

the whole the hound being suspected of hiding in a monastery in the books, but that is unlikely to happen in the show. It wouldn't match the character in the show... I.e more likely to find him a drunken hobo or hiding out in a farm or joining the bannerless

Oh yeah definitely, the Clegane thing just made me laugh because it was so sudden with everyone calling him Clegane even though it seemed like they were going to keep it a mystery at first.

But nah I think Martin has even said, and I've definitely accepted we're just 2 different stories now, wayyyy too much has changed. Like the complete sad absence of LSH and the ignoring of the Riverlands as a whole. I joked with a friend watch Martin not even bring back Jon in the books just to fuck with everyone, she was not impressed.

No. They can't kill of every major character so easily or even bring them back if they get other jobs between their hiatus from the show.

The actress who played cat stark has other shows and films, but if those wrap. The characters can continue but may do so later.

He knows he's a dangerous liability to others, yet he does nothing.

it's like we don't watch the same show, all he does is try his best to be useful and not be a liability, which is why he is going to become a meister so he can be more useful

Nah, this is purely matter of opinion. You already see him as doing his best, I believe that he could do a lot better. Starting with some cardio.

To be fair he wasn't that retarded, I mean even when he could talk he wasn't really bright and when he became Hodor you could still see he understood what people told him just couldn't really respond.

Generally speaking the reasons those terms may be used on a woman is if she has earned those titles. So they are meant to be negative.
