Oh, and while it isn't ok, it is a great tactic. If your attacker is having difficulty breathing then he will be less likely to continue trying to fight.
I am happy to say that, while I was bullied for most of my school life, I have manage to deftly avoid nearly every violent situation as a kid. Especially after this one incident where I picked up a kid the same size as myself, fully off the ground, and pinned him to a wall by his throat, one handed too, because he picked possibly the worst time ever to start giving me shit...

Firstly. My dad grew up in India, and moved around a lot as a kid and, as I understand, had been in a few gangs. I mean proper 1950's teenage street gangs (my dad was born in 1944), not like today's "gangstas". That is the environment in which he learnt to fight, and the faster you took someone out of the fight the less likely you were to have a knife pulled on you.

Second. At the time he dispensed this bit of advice our family had just moved to a small town, and, thanks to my brothers stupid actions, managed to get off on the wrong foot with both our neighbours.
Both marijuana grower/dealers (soon after our moving their my idiot brother decided to help himself to one of their crops), who sought recompense by occasionally trying to run my dad off the road when he was taking my sister and I to or from school. They also lit fire to the 100 acre property we were living on at the time, which was 99% eucalyptus, and eucalyptus burns like a motherfucker.
My brother wasn't in school at the time, I don't think, and that left my sister and I to deal with our neighbour kids, who had apparently been told by their parents to make our lives hell at school.
So in short, it was justified at the time.

Lastly. He also told me and my sister to be careful if we had to do it, and never be the one to start the fight.
