I read your conversation with crunchyspoon and I just had to say that you need to bait the counters. They aren't op or game breaking, they have a lot of risk. If you're getting countered too often it means two things, one you aren't mixing up your aproaches good enough, and two your punish game needs improving. If you watch a high level tournament match and someone is using a character who has a counter you'll notice they don't keep spaming it, in fact they hardly use it at all.

You can't grab in the air, so as long as they are airborne they can (and WILL) counter you if you try to follow up with another attack.
Moreover, attacking someone in the air is a maneuver that requires you to match their trajectory with your own. In other words, you only have ONE interval to hit someone that's airborne to follow up with an attack. Meaning, so long as they counter while you are within that interval, you cannot follow up with attacks.
And seeing as though not only can you counter in the air, but also counters break the game, they can, and yes, WILL counter you every time you try to attack them in the air.
It's a game-ruining mechanic, and way to many character have the ability. It's the reason why me and all my friends stopped playing this game.

If you know that they'll counter, just wait it out. It's literally like a second and then use your fastest aerial on them. You can also do that same with air dodges. Man, if you know they're going to counter then why do you keep attacking? Most counters have HORRENDOUS end-lag so just punish that. It requires patience which counter spammers most likely don't have.

No, because the interval of which counters is roughly the same amount of time as you have to hit them while you're both in midair. And the lag time is hardly "horrendous." Play a game as Shulk and use a counter. You can easily see that his counter interval is not only way too long, but also longer than the lag time afterwards. I'm not just making this shit up, this happened game after game after game. It doesn't matter how good or patient you are, the fact that pressing one attack can mean KOing someone guarantees people are going to use it no matter what their skill level. Melee's counter system was perfect and I have no idea why they fucked it so hard. It's not fun playing against someone with a counter, and seeing as though there's so many characters with counters, most of the game ends up being not fun.

Alright give me an example of a character you're using and a character that has a counter. You don't have to follow them in the air, ESPECIALLY if you know that they spam counter. They most likely can't do too much else if they're landing. If they air dodge to the ground, that's a free punish since landing while air dodging has a lot of lag. Also Shulk's counter is only active in the first half of the move, the rest is cool down. Hit him in the last few frames and he'll flinch. If the counter system was as bad as you say it was, Little Mac, Shulk and Corrin would be S-tier.
