Learn the different between being cynical and telling the truth. Band wagons aren't really doing anything for the actual cause, it's people looking for any reason to pat themselves on the back for doing next to nothing. Raising awareness made sense for things like ALS, no one knew what it was. But things like depression and bombings, everyone is aware of those.

Raisin awareness is a nice way of saying "I'm too lazy to help so I'm just going to pretending like I'm doing something"

Every single god damn person on this planet is aware bombing is an issue.

If you are raising awareness, you aren't pretending to do something, you are actually doing something. Sure every person knows bombing is an issue, but I highly doubt everyone knows that there was an issue in France.
I'm sorry your cynical ass is upset about people trendhopping, but let it be if it actually does some good, which raising awareness, as insignificant as it may be, does.

As an American, what could I possibly do? I know there is no way for me personally to help those affected by this tragedy, it's up to my government to do something. I just feel like it could be some small comfort in people directly affected by it going on Facebook and seeing millions sending their love. If nothing else, it shows that you care. Not saying that if you don't do it, you don't care. It's just something immediately obvious going on Facebook

Showing support is perfectly ok and welcome, raising awareness is just stupid. Everyone is aware it's happening. Showing support is kind and may even raise awareness in the process.
