Kipping is actually done for a reason, not bragging rights. To start with, the main goal is to maintain your heart rate while still getting the work out in. Normal weight lifting is generally anaerobic, as are pull ups. By kipping you can keep your heart rate up. Another advantage is that it works out more than one muscle group. Thirdly, it's really good for helping with shoulder flexibility (however this is an intermediate workout, so you should not kip if you lack the flexibility). And a final reason(that goes along with the first) is that you technically exert more energy. You move the same distance, but in higher intervals.

The disadvantages are: Not good for beginners or those who lack shoulder flexibility, and the fact that it doesn't isolate a muscle group like normal pull ups do. If you want strength training, do weightlifting.
