The links make it seem like the difference is more then just regional naming of animals.

They seem to indicate that the different regional names indicate the different hemispheres of the species.

Possums and Opossums are different types of marsupials. I would imagine a zoo has the Australian possum as opposed to the Western opossum considering opossums can be found in the middle of the road all over the U.S.
