The render is done by computers in the background. The computers could easily render 24 hours a day, and they might have been able to render in the background while the computers were being used for other things. Even if not, they simply could have had more than one computer to work with per person.

Yup! If you want more information on how they do it, look up "render farms."

Render farms. Nuff said

Yeah I did some calculations as well and it didn't seem plausible. "They must have had like thousands of computational units or it must have taken several years(!) ... "

... and yes: "To render Avatar, Weta used a 10,000 sq ft (930 m2) server farm making use of 4,000 Hewlett-Packard servers with 35,000 processor cores with 104 terabytes of RAM and three petabytes of network area storage running Ubuntu Linux, Grid Engine cluster manager ..."

They definitely didn't have it all done on one computer. I may be wrong, but it seems logical larger studios have back rooms full of computers to render out the frames of each scene 24/7.

That's one computers load
They spend an hour on a scene or 2 then let the computer render the details, and by computer I mean Database of somewhere around a thousand. They didn't actually put in every detail, like hair, grass, leaves, it's CG fully.

Well, only about 60% of the film was CGI, lots was other special effects and live action. That being said, 12,047,040*.6=7,228,224 hours. That, being spread over 2 years from what I could find, the time it took to actually make it, not including the other 11 years it took him to get funding and whatnot. 2 years of principal photography, which is when CGI rendering would have started with it. askville.amazon.com/long-make-movie-Avatar/AnswerViewer.do?requestId=68737042 , would give 9,888.13133 hours per day assuming it started January 1 2007 and ended December 31 2008 (365 days in 2007, 366 in 2008) and no days off. . If we assume 8 hour days, that would require 1236 people working every day on something. There were more than 1000 people who worked on the film, but there isn't likely 1236 that worked on the CGI alone. Still, breaking it down, it's possible, just not very probable.
