I didn't say it did - but (in some countries) it does. There's no denying it has a negative impact on social structure by allowing people to succumb to a belief system they have no control over. Religious establishment has the right to say things like "don't treat gays nicely" or, in some countries, "hang them", because people want to believe something for their own personal benefit, and that's wrong.

You being spiritual doesn't kill people, but succumbing yourself to a religious establishment such as Christianity, has effect on other people's lives, and that's not fair; because whether you agree with the establishment's views or not, ticking that "I'm a xyz" box on the census gives them power to influence things in a way determined by how they interpret, in a 2000-year-old book, he unreasoned, unexplained, and frankly unfair teachings of a pre-historic, nobody of a God.

This translation is from the New American Standard Bible, " Then God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years; 15 and let them be for lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. 16 God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day, and the lesser light to govern the night; He made the stars also. 17 God placed them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 and to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good. 19 There was evening and there was morning, a fourth day. "
User avatar #636 - tonysangiorgio (08/08/2012) [-]
But it was clearly stated that the light was already there. He appointed the sun and moon out of the light. Basically what he did was take the light and said, "Ok, here's the sun. You govern the day, and here's the moon. You govern the night. I just made a sun and moon out of light. So the light being there, vegetation was able to grow.

There are thousands of old religions "pegan" religions that stretch back before jesus and they have people doing those same things some even share the same birth day others share his deathday too. also coincidences happen. Also there are cult leaders now a days who did "miricles". read the bible he raided a temple he died a criminal. back than they crucified people for crimes. thousands of people were killed like that and others were killed in worse ways like the being roasted in side a fake bull.

The sun was the light. It says he made the heavens and the earth, and than said, "Let there be light." And he called the light day, and the dark night. So there's your answer.
#635 - anonymous (08/08/2012) [-]

#637 - RequieminMortis (08/08/2012) [-]
The bit about "religion being an insurance policy" basically sums up Pascal's Wager. The biggest flaw with Pascal's Wager is that it's working under the assumption that the God in question is the Christian God, which raises a problem- what if you're wrong? What if you choose to believe in the Christian God, only to find out upon death that it's a different god, or a whole pantheon of gods? Would you be as screwed as the atheists who choose not to believe? The only way the Wager really works is if you believe in EVERY possible deity, which simply isn't possible.

And it's not hard to be an atheist- you simply don't believe in any deities. But even if it was, the easy way isn't always the right way. It's easier to claim that, say, mankind was created by an invisible man in the sky and leave at that, than it is to fully understand all the evidence supporting humanity's evolution from earlier hominids (even I don't fully understand evolution), but the evidence is heavily in favor of evolution being a scientific fact. Forgiveness is a lot harder than just staying mad at someone, but ultimately it's better if you forgive them, if only to rid yourself of the anger and hurt you feel and move on.

Not saying you should renounce Christianity and become an atheist. If your beliefs truly make you happy, and you don't use them as justification for hatred, bigotry and stupidity, then by all means continue believing.
#596 - guiguito (08/08/2012) [-]
people only say they are atheists cuz they moms forced them into going to cruch
if NOT being a atheist is to belive in something, no one is cuz i belive in pokemon, and they are a higher power
#593 - anonymous (08/08/2012) [-]
You say this as if Christianity i the only religion. Lets say Christianity is wrong but some religion from a secluded village in Africa is right. Your insurance policy only covers Christianity. Seems like you're out of luck my friend, because if you don't believe in this "real" African god, then your punishment is rape by a tigermonkeyshark in the afterlife.
User avatar #599 - tonysangiorgio (08/08/2012) [-]
Well, if that's the case, then so be it. But I felt like Christianity was a better insurance policy than the rest, so I went with it. But honestly Religion doesn't sound as ridiculous as you make it sound. If you just consider it nothing does. I've considered science, and it doesn't sound ridiculous to me. I just didn't believe it was right.
User avatar #572 - Aethlius (08/08/2012) [-]
budha isn't a god or higher power. i understand why some people need religion because they can't handle life all that well. it's just hard for me to believe in a god.
User avatar #587 - tonysangiorgio (08/08/2012) [-]
It's not about not being able to handle our lives. It's about following something we believe is true. Just like you do. I'm sure there is something you believe that can not be completely proven. But there is strong evidence that practically proves my religion. Jesus. Is not only mentioned in The Bible, but he is also mentioned in the Koran. Though he is not mentioned favorably. Along with that, there are many other historical landmarks, and historical figures mentioned in The Bible. And if Jesus, is real, why would the rest of the bible not be. This is why it's easier for me to believe in God. But if you don't want to. that's your own thing.
